Same for me ;).

Yeah didn't we race in some Star Mazda races together? I think I finished that season in the top 40 worldwide.

I always used 2nd hand wheels and pedals. So I experienced spiking in my throttle, a brake pedal that had no feeling. You think you're on the limit so you need better gear. Tried a brake mod, found half a second all of a sudden.

That was an eye opener for me. I'm convinced a "standard" G25 wheel with a modded brake pedal was holding me back. A professional pedal setup and a great wheel will improve your performance but I wasn't able to buy all that stuff. And I was too competitive so the entire situation was annoying so I quit. Bought a used G27 a couple of years ago and still do some hotlapping in Asetto Corsa.

For €2000,- you're good to go, with a good PC, a raceseat/frame and a wheel.

I don't think €2k will get you into world record territory.

€1300 for pedals alone. https://heusinkveld....?v=796834e7a283

A good Fanatec pedal set is already €600.

Bargain if you choose it over your marriage :)

Good equipment just gives you consistency, not laptime. I got some years ago a world record during some weeks, and I was playing with a 50 euro wheel without force feedback.

Not to take anything away from your world record, but I just explained that a load cell mod for my brake pedal got me half a second, so I don't agree.

It's explainable too, muscle memory works much better with a load cell. There's a reason a real racing car's brake pedal has almost no travel.

Could be, there was only one braking point in the track I got the record

Yuup.

I visited a friend who did the Porsche simracing thing in December (or was it November) and who does the iRacing Road Course World Championship.

He got sponsored a major rig, direct drive wheel, crazy expensive pedals etc. I never mastered the pedals as I'm not used to them, but I realized how much easier it was to drive with proper equipment. It was crazy.

I think I had some world records on FRZ Racing on my phone ages ago. Haven't played it for ages though so I assume they're long gone. Anyone got Christian/Helmut's number?

Mark Priestly has some interesting insights on this sort of thing, it has become a bit more than just gaming.

Thanks for sharing, very nice and honest video and explanations.

Re-equipment:
I was loaned a load-cell brake setup for a while last year. After a few hours getting used to it, I was instantly a few tenths quicker and a hell of alot more consistent. The trickier braking cars all of a sudden became very manageable and i became adept at threshold braking.
I have since got a G29 and the stock pedals are not at all shabby, a vast improvement over the G25 i had previously. But, obviously not quite as good as the load cell.

Yes, lots of crashed too, not a good exhibition for simracing

So what happens now? Can the car get 'fixed' and rejoin? Never watched an online sim race before

Yeah if there's not too much damage it can be repaired in the pits. Can take a lot time though.

Does anyone else see this eRacing thing as being a savior to future motorsport?

An issue with establishing a fan of motorsport - especially in poorer nations - is the cost to participate is so high.  Most kids want to imitate and dream of being a star athlete is part of what creates a fan.  Grab a soccer ball and go pretend you're Ronaldo.

With eRacing not only can you do the same, but you can actually compete against the stars of the sport in a relatively realistic manner.  Sure, you could play Ronaldo on FIFA online, but mashing buttons and moving joysticks isn't an accurate reflection of any ball sport, and beating Ronaldo at FIFA doesn't relate to beating Ronaldo on a pitch.  If you beat a Norris/Verstappen (or even another gamer) on iRacing, you have a legitimate reason to be proud because of how close reality can be replicated.

Yes, I see it being the new grassroots of motorsport in the future.

Wow, Lando went out with a damaged car and lost it too. Guess that's race over.

Edit: He's streaming here, sits in the pits for a 35min repair.

Two F1 drivers of different teams talking on team speak, streaming in twitch, while playing an online racing simulator. What a time to be alive

My mind is blown that two current F1 drivers are on Twitch playing a racing sim. I mean it makes sense right. They're young and racing sims are where they've been for years. But I'm struggling to get my head around it and I've watched Twitch for years. And it's not even a promotional event.

It's mindblowing that iRacing streamed it via YouTube and did not use Twitch, as I said before, it's Twitch chat that makes such events a great experience. Good thing Norris did a Twitch stream.

How is it different to live chat on YouTube though? When I think of Twitch chat all I think is of is constant ‘kappa, kappa kappa’!

Sort of on topic. I didn’t want to make a thread for this and I couldn’t find a dedicated esports thread.

But Lewis Hamilton will be participating in the pro-am exhibition race during the Gran Turismo Sport world finals in Monaco. Should be interesting! Other than having the logo on his hat, he hasn’t really been involved with GTS since it came out.

GTS world finals is on Nov 22-24 and is broadcasted on youtube. That pro-am race will probably be on the 23rd.

I wonder how long until we see gaming as a legit recruiting ground for real racing seats. I know there's already a pathway there, but I'm talking about a direct stepping stone. It will happen in my lifetime.

How long until we see legit racing as training ground for gaming. Max may be blazing a trail to the future.

You don’t have to read it.

Look where that attitude has got the print version of Autosport.
