They decided to encase the wheels to allow for some close bumping around, so now they need to back off and actually let it happen.

I don't think so. Those enclosures are as flimsy as buggery I imagine. Was merely aesthetic i opine

What do you suggest as an alternative then? Waive penalties for blatant infringements thereof ? Or no rules at all!   :D

This post assumes 2 things, that the rules are written in a sensible way and/or that they are being applied in a sensible way. I think that their is an argument that neither is true, particularly the application of rules.

I'm pretty sure Sims slightly touched Mortara's rear there, causing the spin.
That was my first impression watching it, that Mortara's rear cam can be misleading due to the super high FOV angle

The purpose of them is to reduce drag.

The purpose of them is to reduce drag.

Thanks for the clarification.

I remember at first sight of gen 1 cars thinking WTF is that! Now I'm all comfortable with them.

I still think one of the main reasons they introduced the fenders was to aid close street racing in preventing open wheels interlocking and causing more wrecks and more safety cars, moreso than any aerodynamic considerations.

I think that might have been the case on gen1 but as you can see they are even more enclosed on gen2.

One of the main purposes of the gen2 design was to reduce the drag (hence the lack of rear wing too)
