Isolated from the context it's not bad but I don't see much in it which honors 1000th race apart from the stickers.

Move this to the RB thread if need be...

But the fact that a helmet design's effects on the aero is a consideration speaks volumes about what is wrong with F1.  Worse than those monkey-seats above the exhausts.

Oh, please. It‘s been a consideration for well over a decade. I remember that time, back in the Ferrari days, when Michael Schumacher tried a helmet with that gargantuan spoiler-y thing at the back (the exact technical term for which escapes me at the moment). That must‘ve happened a good 15 years ago now, but I couldn‘t find a picture to verify this. Obviously the methods were a bit more crude back then, but if you don‘t think that helmets have been designed with their aerodynamic properties in mind for a long time I might have a bridge to sell you.

It‘s not usually as prominent as in Verstappen‘s case, but technology has progressed to the point where these incremental gains or losses can be made visible. This is no better or worse than what we see at literally every other race weekend, where one extra slot in the floor is introduced for a minimal gain in downforce. It‘s a curiosity, but that‘s about it.

Lauda also had an "aerodynamic" helmet in 1976:

From the link I can see that this is probably Monza, but my God, even without the burns that contraption looks physically painful.

Damn, would have been so cool if he just went 100% for Michael's '94 design. Looks a great paint job.

I'll just pop these up as a compare and contrast.  From the Goodwood Members' Meeting yesterday.  Historic racers, all with simple, yet distinctive, helmet designs...

Jason Minshaw.

Even Minshaw's has some pointless flecks but they do not disturb the overall harmony of the design.

How come they get it so right, yet contemporary racers get it so wrong?

Elegant helmets, for a more civilized age.

Quote from TenTenths.com in Jan 2002.  Used during testing.....

"Asymmetrical the design is divided into two longitudinally. The one half is the same colours of the Ferrari ace's original helmet. However the other half, which is in tones of yellow, bares more of a resemblance to that of his younger brother Ralf's helmet.

Schumacher's new helmet, which is designed by the Schuberth company, if a prototype helmet that is to be tested by both of the Schumacher brothers. As there is only one existing prototype at the moment it was necessary to satisfy the sponsors of both Ferrari and Williams and that is how the helmet got its design."

Thank you sir.

Grosjean has a special helmet for the 1000th GP

I don't understand why he'd do that. It's not his 1000th GP, is it just to get attention?

Yea, he probably wont even last the 2nd corner. So he needs to go out in style i guess :rotfl:

Grosjeans special one looks slightly less crap than the usual one but still way to busy. Its like all current single seater drivers pick their 'design' out of some generic image bank for people with no imagination or originality.

I like Ian Bankhursts one, although personally id go for bolder colours.

Contemporary racers are (mostly) young, historic racers are (mostly) old. To put it into context, Ayrton Senna had been dead five years when Lando Norris was born. He's too young to be able to remember Michael Schumacher winning a championship. He probably doesn't remember Alonso winning one first hand either.

The designs of the 70s, 80s and 90s are an irrelevance to the current field. They didn't grow up wanting to emulate those drivers. They grew up watching drivers with increasingly busy designs. They grew up watching Sebastian Vettel change his design every race.

If I took up racing today, I'd have something like you posted, but that's because I'm an old fart. I can't expect young drivers to do the same, just as I don't expect my kids to dress like I do or listen to the music that I do.

Nice JPM tribute.

Monty's less successful post-F1 career has somehow tarnished his legacy. He really is one of the best drivers never to win the WDC. It's cool that Russell is a fan.

Love this, even the sticker above the visor is simple duct tape.

Now that's how you do retro helmets. It's as far as it's ever gonna get while staying within regulations.

I can even see imperfections in the paint like the orange peel effect and the tape not done 100%. These boys have knocked it out the park with the helmets.

Ricciardo's is actually Jack Brabham's design.  Silver with a black Mohican stripe.

How often do these guys change their helmets? Not the design, but the length of time they use them.

Like, I get that Russell may be a Montoya fan and obviously have no issue with that.

But I don't get the idea. I understand the Renault duo with their vintage look, and even Grosjean, with his supposedly elegant design for the occasion. But what does Montoya have to do with the fact that this is the 1000th F1 GP? Am I missing something here?

Agree.. I don't like the zippered effect.. I get he was a Williams guy but way better approaches to Incorporate a Williams theme then one of the guys that drove Williams nuts with his overweightedness :rotfl: and wasn't even their most successful driver.. I do not see how the 1000 gp meant to honor one of your favorite drivers :rotfl: vs. honouring one of the most successful teams ever and you're one of their drivers.. so either a nod to F1, a nod to Williams or a nod being in it (a F1 logo with thumbs emoji would have been way more fitting)... this just seems silly.. showing his age and immaturity.. lets hope he is at least as tough and balls to the wall as Juan was and sticks his elbows out really far...

I would have used one of their most iconic cars as inpiration..

williams-fw14b-renault_1.jpg

Hulk's helmet is just plain AWESOMENESS.. hope he keeps for the rest of his career.  Now that's how you do it!  Orange peel effect, eletrical and duct tapes.  Boo yaaa.  Best helment easily of the last 20 years.  Reminds of the cool Hill's (father and son) design execution.

Oh, so It's because his first helmet was inspired by his brother's helmet who in turn had been inspired by this guy who was sort of a legend at Wiliams and who also happens do be one of the drivers he likes and it's also F1's 1000th race.

Gotcha. Makes sense now.

MONTOYA a sort of LEGEND??????????????  Man the terms GOAT and LEGEND are used way way way to lightly these days by millenials and snowflake, I missed that quote from Russell earlier.. man alive..

The slightly ironic thing is Russell's version of Montoya's helmet is better than Montoya's version.  JPM's was always far too over-fussy.  There was no need for the rabbit ears or the colour change over - and he had extra lines for no reason as well.
