For completeness, Hamilton's Lauda-tribute helmet:

Nice to see both "Ferrari Lauda" and "McLaren Lauda" represented.  Seeing as Räikkönen is already affiliated with James Hunt, perhaps Giovinazzi missed a trick in not having a "Brabham(-Alfa) Lauda" design.

This shows 2 things.

1. Old helmet designs are amazing.

2. The current crop of designs are nothing but a blithering mess.

He should keep this one.

As a huge Bernd Schneider fan, I was very pleased with Seb‘s choice of tribute design this weekend.

Also, Hamilton’s special helmet for the weekend is a great improvement over his normal look (which I don‘t personally mind, but I understand why it‘s not to people‘s tastes).

What do you mean? No, he's sitting in the Renault pit box.

Pretty shabby pit box!

Looks to me as if he's sitting on a marshall's chair behind advertising hoardings right after crashing out...

Without wishing to divert from this thread's topic, I found it refreshing to take a backward look at the helmet designs in the current feature 'The Best and Worst looking F1 Cars from 1995' https://www.autospor...g-f1-cars-in-95

..just popping across from Nostalgia Forum..   ;)

Just saw this... not a real driver helmet, but how cool would that design be?   ;)

Gasly RBR helmet vs Albon STR helmet. I guess Albon's helmet won't change much, except for the different Red Bull logo colors (blue/silver -> darkblue/red/yellow logo)

Norris has a Rossi inspired design for Monza.

I was concerned at first, given some of the detritus Valentino has sported over the years - but it's bold, clean and distinctive - and far better than Lando's regular design.

I actually cracked a huge smile when I saw that design on Instagram. Looks really, really good.

Most helmets look 2000% better simply by removing that damn "halo" band around the top!

Are they still limited to just one helmet design change per season or we are back into "Vettel territory"?

Lando's helmet is great BTW!

Kvyat has been denied permission to use a special livery in Sochi, having already done so at Monza.

FIA shits me sometimes. Last weekend with RIC's penalty; this weekend with stupid helmet rules that literally no one wants or asked for.

Actually whilst kinda irrelevant I actually like this rule.

Most of the drivers have rubbish designs these days, then added to that they would change them left right and centre, much prefer drivers having their design that they stick to

Funny... I may not be the best mathematician in the forum, but seems to me that using a predominantly white helmet during most of the season, an orange helmet in Belgium and a yellow helmet in Austria adds up to approximately three helmets, doesn't it?

Why did Verstappen get away with it?

Don’t neccesarily agree with it, but here you go

In order for drivers to be easily distinguished from one another whilst they are on the track, the crash helmet of each driver must, with the exception of one Event of the driver's choice, be presented in substantially the same livery at every Event during a Championship season.. Drivers have been able to get around the wording of the rules by running with the same overall design but with different colours. Max Verstappen is one example of a driver who has done this.

Also from the same article

Other drivers have been more extreme in changing things, however. Sebastian Vettel ran with a Niki Lauda design at the Monaco Grand Prix, a Bernd Schneider inspired design in Germany, and other colours in Italy and Singapore.

Same for Vettel, he's had at least 3 specials this year.

I'm dumbfounded why now for Kvyat they draw the line.

I was simply under the impression that while they did set up this rule, they didn't really regulate it strictly unless it got out of hand.

EDIT: I see, it's 'substantially' different. A grey area like the rest of the FIA.

It's a stupid rule, and one that was brought about just because a small number of people were getting their pants in a bunch over drivers having a bit of creative fun. Talk about "old man yells at cloud".

I enjoy seeing what different designs drivers bring - it adds a bit more interest to a race weekend, and they should be allowed to change their helmet designs as frequently as they like imo.

If only they were creative and didn't look like there were styled by the same guy...

from what I recall the majority was happy about this change. It's one of those typical F1 fans things where the general opinion makes a 180 once you realize the cons of the new system. And then it gets changed back and the old arguments return again.

IMO the current rules are fine, what they should do maybe do is specifying the exact punishment. A donation to a charity as a sacrifice for changing your lid color should be a win-win for everyone involved.

OK, but in that case I think we can agree that Kvyat's Monza helmet was the same design, only with a different colour scheme. So this one in Russia should count as the REAL CHANGE, right?

At the end of the day, it's the kid's home GP, let him be happy.

I saw this news and I'm with everyone else here in that I think it's a stupid rule, an overreaction to Vettel taking the piss with his helmet changes a few years ago. But at the end of the day the only "brand" he damaged was his own, if he did any damage at all.

None of the current drivers have recognisable helmet designs anymore, and even with the rule in place they change them on a yearly basis. I can picture Lewis Hamilton's original helmet design, the yellow with the Grenadian stripes on it, but his helmet isn't even yellow anymore. The rule doesn't even do what it's meant to do and give the fans a recognisable image.

It's the same as the liveries rule, which was brought in just to spite BAR.

It's a good rule.

Ideally they also should also prohibit size and quality of sponsor branding on helmets as well...
