Why they stay with the 5-lug wheels is beyond me. Get with the times Nascar. A center-lock wheel would save time in the pit stops, stop the loose wheels and uncontrolled tires situation, along with that the '4 lug nut' controversy etc. There's things that they do that don't make sense to me. It's not a STOCK car, so there's no reason they should do little things like that when they aren't using their stock wheels. The Camry isn't a V8 or RWD. Just a weird choice imo.

Makes the pitstops longer, adds some differentiation(in that you can make mistakes, adds to the story lines, etc). It is genuinely impressive watching them do 5 lug nuts that quickly.

Kind of like the lack of a pit lane speed limiter...keeps the human element and penalties have livened up more than a few races

You can have just as long pit stops with a single lug wheel, partly because they still have to refuel. And they can cut down on men over the wall which would reduce the risk of injury with their chaotic pit-stops, even if I find that part of their appeal. Making mistakes with the lug nuts leads to a loose wheel which could be only just a small problem or a projectile. Every series with center lock wheels still has pit stop drama anyway, so I don't think makes much sense.

Single lugnut takes as many crew members as now? Also they'd get done in a flash and every pitstop would just be waiting for the fuel to finish. Forever.

Which imo would still  be good. And if they cut down on the number of people changing the tires it wouldn't go so fast. But if the tires are done before the fuel that makes fuel usage more of an issue which adds another element to the races. I don't like that much but I just question the logic of staying with 5 lugnuts if they're trying to be more with the times or 'futuristic'.

Has NASCAR ever really tried to be with the times, let alone futuristic? They didn't even get fuel injection until 2012. If there's one series where tradition holds stronger than most, its NASCAR. I think they took their time moving from cross-ply to radial tyres too.

Not that changing from 5 nuts to 1 would change the number of people on a tyre change. Either way uses one guy with a wheel gun per wheel, two in total if I'm not mistaken. The changing one side of the car and then the other is one of the main features of a NASCAR pit stop, along with fueling from cans.

I don't think being pushed the whole race by a truck is a valid strategy.
