Am I the only one wondering why McLaren is wasting money on a futuristic prototype instead of making the 2019 or 2020 car faster?? When everyone complains about the costs of competing in F1, this boggles my mind. The way things are going, F1 might not even exist in 2050.

McLaren 2050 prototype.

Well it's fully battery operated it seems. I view it as a synthesis of F1 and FE.
I do understand that in order to get there where they want to be in 2050 will need decades of R&D.
At the least it moved on from the Halo.

I'm pretty sure a grand total of zero people from the f1 team were working on that project
This. Everyone else complaining about McLaren needing to focus on F1 is a ****. It's McLaren Applied Technologies who came up with the concept. Not the team.

I'm pretty sure you're the only one wondering.
And no, Mclaren did not divert attention or budget from the 2019 car to focus on the 2050 car.

At this point I'd nearly bet money on it.

Could you imagine how fast Redbull would be if they didn't waste all that effort bottling cans of piss!
Hasn't Red Bull come up with some futuristic F1 concepts in the past? I don't recall anyone pissing on them over it, but it seems that Mclaren is now the forum's Aunt Sally

I’m not sure how useful the marketing department would be if they were shifted to the engineering department.

What is going to replace it?

Oh God...what next?
So some...drawings(!), of an actually different department, seems to get money and focus off the racing team to you?
What they should do next? I say they cancel all catering and close down the canteen, those unnecessary early morning scrambled eggs means less time in wind tunnel!
Now that i think of it ,force the cleaning staff to use broom instead of vacuums, will definitely translate to at least 1.2sec per lap

Depends what you mean by replaced? By many definitions it could be that nothing at all will 'replace' it.
Though if you mean 'the most globally popular motorsport series in 2050' ....it could be literally any one from the existing set or any future series yet to be established.

Of all the wise words on the forum, these are the most inspiring.
