Gee, the guy says that it was the best first day ever (meaning in pre-season testing). Edit: And since he is not that recklessly overwhelmingly blabbering kinda guy, those words (best first day ever (regarding winter testing)) are something.

Everybody knows that

Certainly not.

Tyre delta should be somewhere between 0.7-1 s, for Ferrari it was even bigger, then you have also Mercedes not using DRS and being visible heavier, this can be easily another second as well. And that's not even including any other largely unknown variables like engine settings.

I'd be surprised if Red Bull came up with anything close like that article suggests, unless they made different assumptions which will be either proven to be right or wrong the more days they are running.

Gee, the guy says that it was the best first day ever (meaning in pre-season testing).

Well, that's great, doesnt mean that his car is clearly better than the others.

Not sure that's a nailed on positive. Recall McLaren a few season back who were faster than their simulations suggested, which then sent them way off course in development.

Exactly, it's never good to be off as it means somewhere along the way things aren't adding up.

Things that work in the simulation might not work in the real world; and that's not a good way to improve at all.

But of course we shouldn't just take the word of someone for this. That's all sensitive information that people don't run out of the pitbox to scream at random passers-by.

Folks have to write something on a day like this. You can't very well cover F1 and then not make articles on the first day of testing.

Could it be that they start well and through miscalculation can’t add to their speed over the season?

If I wanted to waste my life and time, I could go back and find countless(and I do mean countless) times when y'all talked about the 2018 car being a 'diva' as well. Hell I've even seen technical articles on professional sites referencing the 2018 car as a 'diva' as well. Everybody knows the car was incredible. The Ferrari was excellent as well, but the Merc, when *working ideally*, was class of the field.

Ferrari have work to do.

A great start overall. Lots of mileage and no hiding pace. Ferrari and Seb put it all out there.

This is a good building block for the season and presumably they will put on more parts in the 2nd week and eventually the Melbourne package will be a lot different.

Ferrari should run more on the harder tyres. Presumably they will be better with the softer compounds as usual.

Also just wanted to put into context, last year after winter testing it was Red Bull Vs Merc for the title but Ferrari was on the pace in Melbourne..

Some Ferrari guy told Gary Anderson the car is faster than simulations suggested

That is:

a) Bad news. Your correlations are wrong and you just got lucky the car is fast.

or

b) One of Ferrari staff just playing with Anderson.

Good first day, no more. And that is great news by itself. I don't think Mercedes has shown their hand yet, though. It's a loooong season.

Also Mark Hughes: "Ferrari could thrive on Domenicali return" (2019!).

Let's just wait a bit. Nobody knows how well everyone is prepared for the next season.

There'll be plenty of time for reflecting and speculating after the tests are done.

As does every other quality analyst. There really is no discussion about that anywhere outside of the "autosport Ferrari thread".

Ferrari were faster than Red Bull and the other teams, but not really on the pace with Mercedes.

Vettel won through good pit strategy and defence, and the difficulty in passing at Albert Park.

They were very much on the pace for Bahrain.

Any news on the PU side? Still using two batteries? I seem to recall a twit or a comment along the lines of the Ferrari not really needing to slow down to recharge batteries. I may be confused, though.

Yep, Mercedes miscalculated their VSC pit window.

I'm not liking the matte finish. It looks like it is made of a pencil's red eraser.

Vettel is so bad he needs a T-wing to keep the car on track

This is easily the best looking Ferrari since the 2010 car. If they had the Merc nose it would be vying for best looking car on the grid!

I also think it's the best looking Ferrari since 2008 actually and I also like the Merc nose :D

Any idea what is next to the "Lenovo" on the bargeboard? Might just be an artefact in the picture - but looks shiny / possibly metal?

So Merc is quite a bit longer and running less rake... similar story to last two years really.

Both teams stuck with their guns and didn't make massive changes in their aero concepts.

I may be wrong but Ferrari was much closer to Merc last season regarding length.

The launch renders were quite simple.. but like several cars on the grid this year, the harder you look the more you notice little details that are... exquisite..

This time last year it was doom and gloom because we weren't as fast as Merc from day 1. Now people are worried because the car is faster (or appears to be) than the Merc from day 1.

Oh and we have the wrong shade of red on the car... Feck...  :drunk:  :drunk:  :drunk:  :drunk:  :drunk:

Mercedes managed 6 more laps than our boy today annoyingly. I'd have loved the perfect record in this year's Winter testing championship to carry on for a while.

But anyways, anyone got some nice shots of our new boy Charles?

Pic of this:

It'll be interesting whether they stick with it.  It's not obvious that it's gonna be useful for them as their tire situation was very different from Mercedes' last year.

Do OZ provide both teams with the rims or are they built in house and branded by OZ?

OZ builds the wheels.  But they are custom offerings, obviously.  Each team will have their own highly protected IP with their partnership.
