DRS works well but even without DRS you can still overtake as the slipstream is very powerful.

And that's not taking into account the Parachute's they have this season. Even when they are skinny wings. Should be a slipstream fest.

It's all about S2, if Ferrari is decent in S2 than they may capitalize  their (assumed) advantage on rest of the  track. Red Bull will probably be flying in S2. Too  much corners for Porco Rosso I am afraid. :|

All this stuff really ticks all the 'road relevant' boxes.

Anyway, as silly as this is - here's hoping it's for the best. The season could do with a second race winning team, and it might as well be Ferrari.

By the looks and sound of things, the boys at Maranello havent been sitting idle twiddling with their fingers. The drivers sound serious and updates are visible as well. Not that the urgency was lacking before but it appears the results have jolted Ferrari and they mean business. Lets hope we can fight with Mercedes because I know they will be very strong as well.

Not so sure... these look like the usual changes from track-to-track to adapt to certain track conditions.

Going for such a big rear wing makes me wonder if it is really to compensate on slow turns given the more power of the PU or if the floor is working correctly.

It is fascinating. and I thought I read that Ferrari say the rear wing is not Baku-specific.

Did both cars have it? Maybe they are going testing and evaluation in FP1 to prepare for Barcelona.

well poop. ferrari was to evaluate the new floor (Vettel with the old, Leclerc with the new) in fp1, guess they will need to go blindly into fp2 and just bolt the new one anyway.

Nothing to cheer about. We are known to run engines a bit harder on Fridays. Even a very small boost is a lot of laptime in this circuit. Merc will be right up there come Quali.

Pace has nothing to do with engine modes. Their current advantage over Mercedes is middle sector.

Because they're running more wing. It's possible engine modes are responsible for keeping with Merc's pace in S1 and S3, right?

I suppose, but the inherent grip/tyre advantage in S2 is there regardless.

My basic analysis is Ferrari are piling on the downforce and relying on superior engine power to negate the impact of that on the straights.

If the and Merc are running comparable engine modes then that appears to be working - for flying laps at least.

However, if they are running higher modes that might be obscuring the fact that they are paying for the extra downforce on the straights.

I disagree on this. The race pace is inverted with the qualy pace. Something doesn't quite add up, and the only conclusion I can draw is that they ran higher modes for the qualy runs, because they also need to test their updates, and decide on downforce levels. But that wouldn't make sense to do for long runs, as those need more consistency, and they don't want to task the engine for 30 minutes, unnecessarily. I think the long runs are more indicative of the pace between the cars. At least for Ferrari and Mercedes. Red Bull appear off in their own world, as usual.

Yes here, motorsport italy says that only Leclerc ran with the new updates in order to allow the team to carry a back 2 back eval between the two packages.

Yep, good that updates seem to be working so far.

If these fools are serious about winning the titles then they should be dominating and winning here and Barcelona.

Thanks. It's just weird to me that you call the team that you support 'fools'. At least, I think you supported Ferrari in the past. Or I must be missing something here.

The pace is here to stay. Ferrari will get better from here on. They are concentrated on more downforce. It's working.

“Fools” can be a term of frustrated endearment, as well as something of an insult.

If the pace (past three races) set by Mercedes was faster than 2018, Ferrari's pace might still be under threat

And that is why Leclerc needs more experience. He could easily avoid this by going straight to runoff area. And this was his race to win, definitely.

It doesn't look like we have the car to fight for the championship at the moment.

Lacking too much downforce vs Merc, strong engine is not enough... back to the drawing board probably.

I don't know if it's the tires, the front wing, lack of overall downforce or the drivers but it feels a lot like 2014-2016

Bottas 3 tenths clear of Vettel, what even is this car. It falls even slightly outside it’s operating range and it’s like the wheels are on sideways.

Conditions have changed a lot because of Kubica and Leclerc crash.

I think Mercedes lucked into the right windows for soft tyres.

They ran more df which should hepl put heat into the tires under these cooler conditions and were smart enough to let everyone pass and get a tow...

Bottas pulled 3 tenths on Vettel in S3
