I think in terms of equipment you are hard pressed to beat a top fuel car, in terms of danger it has to be the Isle of Man TT....

While it's hard to beat nitro burning Top Fuel dragsters, funny cars and bikes, when you see what they do with monster trucks at the Monster Jam shows they can be pretty extreme as well...

 

Tractor pulls can be pretty crazy too!

Those almost vertical hill climb are creazy to.

Dune climbing (or whatever its name is).

 

Despite being gradually civilised, the idea of Dakar is pretty extreme to me.

 

Speedway takes place on very short ovals with close battles due to very short sprints without any brakes. 

 

Seems to me that the rule for the most extreme sports is that they are the niche within a niche.

...of the extreme and insane amounts of money spend, sometimes on items that provide just a minimal improvement on downforce level and /or drag reduction....

Extreme if it comes as a spectacle to see and thus in appearance, no opinion

The thing is, the TT is not fearsome because of the spectacle, it is fearsome because it is dangerous.

 

it is a spectacle yes, but after a few decades of finding out every year someone else you admire has died, it gets tiresome.

 

Amazing event yes, but far from extreme in terms of bikes.

 

I would suggest Erzberg Rodeo an off road event over the rocks of an old quarry, watching the top men navigate there is insane, but in bike terms, nothing, not even the TT compares to Dakar.  Or for daftness, the crazy hill events in France and Austria where they throw bikes with massive swing arms up am impossible to climb dirt hill that you can't even walk up!

I would say heading down Bray Hill, flat out on a Superbike is more extreme than that.

I now remember the stories about a World championship tournament, held in Russia and one of the competitors in a heat literally being torn apart by his opponents after he had lost control. A part of the Ice rink top layer (ice fragments) was red from then on. There still had to be a world champion.....

One of the reasons why I never watched these events, too scary for me

 

Still can't understand entirely why Eastern country drivers were so good in this, guess that the moto GP equivalent of that era back then was not `bothred` by Russian drivers. Who nown how the list of champions in the different categories may have looked if there had been russians....

Bloody hell, wouldn't like to be the starter guy standing in a narrow space between two trailers squirreling about...

 

My vote goes to motorbike road racing, just because the the number of deaths and serious injuries in an era when most other motorsports have been getting much safer.

 

Honourable mention to powerboat racing and water speed record attempts, lots of deaths on the water as well although not sure if that counts as motorsport.

Not quite sure the numbers of deaths make any sport more extreme, to me it just means there is no real effort being made to make it safer, which borders on odd at the very least!

Honestly go stand at the bottom of Bray Hill and say it isn't a spectacle, I personally don't call it extreme because of the deaths, I call it extreme because of what they are doing.

I am not doubting that a TT race is extreme on the senses.

 

But for spectacle there are plenty of other motorsports that offer more in my eyes.

 

TT is an easy choice. a good one, but an easy one.  I for one remember the first teim I stood within 20 yards of a top fueller or a Funny car and will never forget that in a hurry. Or watched a 35 car closed grid of stock cars on the first lap of a big race thinking "you could not pay me any money to be in any of those cars"
