Annual F1 ‘retro race’ proposed...

Interesting concept. 1970’s pitbabes would be essential, obviously.
F1 is too up it’s own arse to have something like this happen, and I’m not sure what it adds actually.

Would the retro theme apply to the track too? If so, they're going to need a hell of a lot of gravel to cover the tarmac run off areas.

Would be nice to see, doubt it will happen though.

I don't think it'll happen anyway, but it's a great idea.

Look up the not555 Colin Mcrae tribute Impreza that Subaru setup a few years ago. The livery was shite.

what about the teams that don't have a retro image to go to?
How would a retro HAAS car look?

Better put the drivers in equal road cars and do a few races during the season. Once in a Smart, then a Renault Zoe...

They could always do one from a previous American team. I was going to say Shadow, but since Haas is now mainly black, that wouldn't really work. What about a modern day version of Dan Guerney's Eagle?

So the idea is a race with current F1 cars and drivers but with old liveries and clothing designs?
What's the point?
Would a modern Williams with Canon/Tactel/ICI colour scheme achieve anything? Nope. Could Kubica drive a 1986 Williams Honda? Probably not. So what's the point? Sell this to me. What am I missing?

F1 is so tragic sometimes. Leave the past where it is.

There is nothing wrong with celebrating the past whilst moving forward (in the right direction if that's possible).

Utter nonsense.

Stupid idea by four people only one of whom would have any say on the matter is not "F1".

insurance companies say no thanks
Also this.
Old cars are to the safety standards of back then. Which, depending how far back then you go, might be way way way apart from the standards of today.
I love old F1 cars as much as anyone, but leave it for EuroBOSS races. Unless it's a non-competitive parade.

Because it'd be fun, and something different? Why does there have to be a "point" to it other than that?
I'm starting to think some people around these parts have never had fun in their lives. And when did it become fashionable to **** on the past all of a sudden?
It'd be cool to reminisce about classic liveries, particularly if they were done well. The likes of NASCAR, Supercars and now IMSA have done similar, and they always get a great response from fans. Similar thing happens in NFL and NHL too, with teams using their old colours, or like the Carolina Hurricanes bringing back the Hartford Whalers.

But don't see why the teams shouldn't be allowed one-off liveries in general (sort of like what they did with Alonso in AD).

A lot of the retro liveries would be fag packets. No chance. Although a throwback to the 90s where up to 4th would be lapped, a backmarker would end up 5 laps behind, nobody would run within 2s of the car ahead, and they'd all wait for the pitstops in order to change position would be a good lesson.

Think they are already allowed one off liveries. Red Bull used to do it at Silverstone. https://www.racefans...ife-rb8-livery/

Yes, now we're very lucky to only have people outside the top six lapped, DRS flybys, one stop strategies and fantastically exciting engine and fuel saving going on.

Only worthwhile doing if they put proper drivers in the cars who drive them hard.
I have little interest in seeing a few old F1 cars burbling round running badly coz the drivers are not good enough, you get enough of that at Goodwood, classic events and the like.
There are plenty of cars around, and plenty of variety, as long as you use decent drivers, not even old F1 drivers, as most of them have lost it for obvious reasons.

How dare they propose something fun and lightheated. No sir, not in F1. F1 is all about serious business.

That would be pretty cool. It's a one off and some fun... don't mind it.

Surely it would be McLaren, given the BAT link-up.

As a card carrying old fart who knows that the past was better because I was there (and having more sex) can I just say what complete and utter bollocks. However I was as the 1977 British GP at Silverstone and there was a support race of old 50's F1 cars including Stirling Moss and JM Fangio in a pair of 250F's and it was great to watch those guys in their old cars again. (I'm not old enough to have seen them in their heyday.) That's what should happen - we should be able to see these great old cars driven by past drivers (and of course other historic racing identities) as support events, and leave it at that. A fun celebration of the past before the real cutting edge present.

They'll all be well in their 70s by now, but whatever floats yer boat I guess..

Going to love the retro Haas livery from way back in.....2016. And Racing Point is going to be **** out of luck.
And as others have said a bunch of those retro liveries were based around tobacco brands so the idea isn't going to work, and all you'd get is a Lotus style pastiche of the past liveries covered in modern brands.
Also, do these guys want a pat on the back for coming up with the "retro liveries" idea after Ferrari and McLaren both ran the entire 2018 season with semi-retro liveries and Williams had the old school Martini livery for 5 years...???
There has been nothing stopping Renault from doing the same kind of thing.

No the pitbabes will be as part of another crap Liberty Media special event concept; "Ladies Day," a celebration of women in motorsport.

This would work well at Monaco, narrow track + smaller cars + entitled drivers = mayhem. Wouldn't require any track changes really yet still feel like Monaco. At least one driver would have to have the Nigel Mustache though.

Mercedes - 1955 Silver Arrows
Ferrari - 1975 white Airbox
Red Bull - 1995 Sauber (The first Red Bull livery)
RP - Benson and hedges Jordan (The original team)
Renault - 1977 Yellow teapot
Haas - 1966 Eagle Westlake (American team honours another)
Alfa Romeo - 1984 Benneton livery (they won't go red because of Ferrari) or 1993 Sauber
Toro Rosso - Stoddart era Minardi (the original team)
McLaren - Marlboro
Williams - Canon and camel era

Some retro livery ideas:
Mercedes - 1955 Silver Arrows
Ferrari - 1975 white Airbox
Red Bull - 1995 Sauber (The first Red Bull livery)
RP - Benson and hedges Jordan (The original team)
Renault - 1977 Yellow teapot
Haas - 1966 Eagle Westlake (American team honours another)
Alfa Romeo - 1984 Benneton livery (they won't go red because of Ferrari) or 1993 Sauber
Toro Rosso - Stoddart era Minardi (the original team)
McLaren - Marlboro
Williams - Canon and camel era
But why would sponsors spend millions to advertise someone else's corporate identity ?

There already is an FIA series that's one big F1 retro event. It's good fun too, and usually cheap to visit.
F1 might as well focus on producing a show people will want to remember fondly in 2060.

NASCAR isn't the only other racing category that does this. The Australian Supercars series also does this (during the Sandown 500 weekend I believe) and it's a lot of fun to see even if you don't watch too much of the sport. Gosh, I wish people stop trying to Australianise F1, dang it!

but... if they put halos on classic cars I swear I will firebomb the FIA HQ*

I'd rather see something like Grand Prix Masters, except have the old boys drive today's cars, or at least one of last year's. Each team fields a car for 1 ex F1 driver. It would be interesting at least to see how they perform..
