All in all, I’m quite impressed with how well Dovi performed this weekend. IIRC he compares somewhat equally on raw pace to Ekström, and favourably to Zanardi and Ogier, although the extensive testing at the actual venue would have helped quite a bit. I’m a bit surprised WRT didn’t just call him in at the end of the first lap and hoped for the Safety Car, but still, very good effort. Wouldn’t mind him having a go in the future as well.

I’m surprised more motorbike racers don’t do this tbh because they always seem to be rather competitive - arguably rally drivers too. Didn’t Lorenzo do pretty well when he tested for Mercedes? Nice to see Dovi being so credible on pace.

A certain part of the skillset does appear to translate. I still think Rossi might’ve made a credible, if not spectacular F1 driver at one point and given more preparation, I do think that most good MotoGP riders would perform well in touring cars at the very least.

Sebastien Loeb was quite good in the WTCC too, no shame in being so close to a legend like Yvan Muller even if Lopez smoked them both. Loeb getting on the F1 grid for Abu Dhabi 2009 is one of the strangest stories in recent years, because it was reportedly so damn close to happening. Superlicence small print or something stopped it I think? Can’t remember, will have to google it. But Toro Rosso had the engine running ready for him.

I was watching the race from Dovi's onboard feed on Youtube.

Actually, they called him in during Lap 1.

BUT than, they told him to stay out.
As he was driving past the pitlane entry, they asked him again to Pit in, but it was too late.

Amaetur hour by the team there

I think Dovi did great. He struggled a little bit with tyre management, but his outright pace was great for a debut imho.

He was around 1.5 seconds off Pole Position lap time in quali, & was lapping faster than at least 4-5 cars during the race.

I can see him switching full time to touring car racing or DTM after his MotoGP career, with good results!

Didn't Rast stall at the start? I missed about ten minutes after that.

How did he end up with a huge lead? The graphics indicated that he has pitted?

Another stupid race where the leaders are punished because of an early safety car. I’d rather just see no mandatory pit stops instead of what we currently get.

The race direction gave two laps for everybody in order to pit.
A bit like indycar.
That's the choice of the teams which rolled the dice by staying on track.

Why did they pit on first lap? Mandatory pit and tyres that don't wear too much?

Because they gambled on a SC which would give them track position.

As it turned out, only Rast made it really work.

It's one of these trying days for my favorite drivers it seems.

Interested to see how Rene climbs up the field.

Also shout out to that prince nerd, Keke and Gerhard.

That was a great race by Bruno Spengler.

Rast finishing 7th, 25 points lead in the championship. Color me delighted.

Bruno was super impressive. I doubt even Rast could have challenged him today. It’s one of those days where a specific car/tyre/driver combo is comprehensively superior to everyone and everything else.

It took me a lot longer than I’d like to admit to come to terms with Bruno’s “treason” by defecting to BMW for 2012 and then “stealing” Paffett’s title immediately afterwards, but time heals most wounds, and after his long draught today was the first time I was genuinely, properly happy for him again.

Looking at the Astons, given that they are still down on power (according to Juncadella’s social media) that wasn’t actually a half-bad weekend. Fewer retirements than usual on an engine-heavy track is promising. Juncadella delivered another tyre saving masterclass yesterday, and made the alternate strategy work today. Yes, I’m a fan, but so far there has been a lot more to cheer about for him this year than usual. Di Resta, meanwhile, got the short end of the stick once again. Poor guy couldn’t buy a bit of luck.

Great performance by Spengler, and we all love our cars... but I'm not sure if this is even legal:

There has also been speculation that the DTM could race on the Nurburgring Nordschleife in the future, but Motorsport.com understands this is unlikely. While the World Touring Car Cup and the now-defunct World Touring Car Championship have both raced on the circuit in recent years, the DTM believes that the short number of laps on the 16.12-mile circuit would reduce the spectacle.

Why? The race would be something like ~10 laps in length, really great for the spectators to see the cars for total of about a minute.....

I love the Nordschleife as much as the next guy but WTCC races there have tended to be processions that nobody sees because of the lack of TV cameras through most of the track.....like watching the NW200 from high overhead from the helicopter but with rather less overtaking.

A boring procession that has nothing to do with touring cars, since so many years.

I mean, when could you last buy a rear wheel drive Audi touring car? Probably before WW2......

Thanks for your insight! Although "I haven't seen a single race for years" would have been shorter...

DTM has clearly become a very good product.

When you can have a show at Mickey Mouse track like Misano,Zolder and Assen it means that the product is very very good.

Seems like Berger knows one or two things about making races exciting  :smoking:

Very enjoyable race after the dud we had yesterday (I felt it was quite boring despite the rain), and it was good to see the Astons in somewhat competitive form, with both Juncadella and Di Resta solidly in the points.

Meanwhile, Habsburg continues to disappoint. Still looking forward to seeing how they‘ll solve the situation with him being entered under “von” Habsburg on the entry list once we get to Austria.
