as usual this will be insufferable because of the 'A is faster than B' posts, in a testing topic..

It's better than the same discussions happening before testing lol

Tommorow starts the gap. Only time we are as fast as Mercedes, Ferrari and RB are before we hit the winter tests due all teams start from "zero".

Tomorrow I won't be able to post this important message so I am gonna post it right now.

It is just testing, so calm down . . .

I’m looking forward to the hype trains starting only to be derailed come Melbourne.

My favourite part of the year tbh, due to the unpredictability of it all, and the possibility of every team having made a beast, or some teams having made a flop.

Until those hopes get dashed emphatically in Melbourne.

Does anyone know what time Testing goes green? Can be in anytime zone.

My prediction for testing is that they are gonna be faster than last year because the wings are wider noand that will offset more than the lost of the outwash. At least that'what my CFD eye is telling me.

Binotto just said the car is in principle 1.5 sec slower than the last year, with the new set of rules.

THIs said, teams were screaming that it has got the time back already.

We will see.

Before anyone goes making wild assumptions over every lap, I feel a quick reminder is need for everyone on how last years test times finished, important to note Mclaren were the second fastest team in the test, and Mercedes seventh. While there's much that can be learned, don't go getting too ahead of yourselves.

Ferrari            Sebastian Vettel    Day Seven    Hypersofts    1:17.182

McLaren        Fernando Alonso   Day Eight      Hypersofts    1:17.784

Red Bull         Daniel Ricciardo    Day Six         Hypersofts    1:18.047

Renault          Carlos Sainz         Day Eight       Hypersofts    1:18.092

Haas Kevin    Magnussen           Day Seven     Supersofts    1:18.360

Toro Rosso    Pierre Gasly          Day Seven    Hypersofts     1:18.363

Mercedes      Lewis Hamilton      Day Six         Ultrasofts       1:18.400

Force India    Esteban Ocon       Day Eight      Hypersofts     1:18.967

Sauber          Charles Leclerc     Day Eight      Hypersofts     1:19.118

Williams        Sergey Sirotkin      Day Eight      Softs              1:19.189

Yes we know it's "only" testing but lets for fun look at the "big three" teams at last year's test while we are waiting for this years fun and games. On the Thursday Bottas, Vettel and Verstappen all did 60 lap plus race simulations and the Mercedes was the fastest, proving that you can't just read headline times when analyzing the tests. This was particularly true last year as only Ferrari appeared to do a full low fuel load (short run) qualifying simulation on hypersofts, (Mercedes didn't even use the hypers.)

Adjusting times to similar low-fuel times on new medium tyres (with a few assumptions about relative tyre performance and fuel loads) and you'd get something like: Mercedes  1:18.3ish, Ferrari only very slightly slower say 1:18.4ish & Red Bull significantly behind those two say 1:19.4ish.  In fact a pretty good indication of the race pace pecking order in Melbourne.

The total mileage is also worth looking at when reviewing a teams program and here unsurprisingly  Mercedes completed the greatest mileage of any team.

So yes it's "only" testing - but I'm still going to have a bit of fun trying to figure out what each team is up to and where they stand relative to one another.

Me guessing that Monday is about getting the car go on speeds and then about getting to know the car by adjusting the set up, Tuesday is for the second driver, the same Wednesday is longer run at the end of the day a bit of timed lap, Thursday is the same for the second driver.

Obviously there are bits and pieces of new parts tests as well.

Would love it, only thing that would still be needed is a lap history of every car.

The YouTube stream seems like a placeholder. It was due to start at 8:30CET, then 9:00... Still nothing.

From Twitter @F1Help "With the cars fresh out the factories not all the 300+ sensors have been fitted yet".

It's Kimi Raikkonen! The Finn has buried the Alfa Romeo in the gravel already.
