Hello folks,

I bought Assetto Corsa the Ultimate Edition on PS4 over a week ago and I am having a really really hard time with it and desperately need help/advice.

Firstly I only have a PS4 controller, I don't have the space (nor funds) for a racing chair and wheel-pedal setup.

but my god I'm beyond terrible at this game.  I must have put over 20 hours into it and I still cannot beat the 2nd event in novice career mode (Abarth race) and I've even put the difficulty on easy ..and still I cannot get into the top three.

This is quite embarrassing for me, I've been playing racing games and racing sims for decades but I've never struggled so much on one game.

Any help/suggestions you have would be helpful, thank you

Edit: sorry I made a typo in the title, should be 'badly'.  it won't let me change it though, so I have to live with the shame.

Edit2: Thanks to the very kind mod that edited my title.  love you!

I haven't played AC on PS4 so I can't offer any direct help but does it let you configure the controls? Do you use R2 & L2 for acceleration and braking or right stick? If this is configurable on game try the one that you are not using now if it suits you better. Other than that I can only say that try different levels of assists and stay at those that give you best speed. In my opinion (based on Turismos) DualShock isn't accurate enough to play completely without assists so you have to find level that suits you.

Yes,I use L2/R2 for Brake and Accelerate.   There are other control settings and I've tried changing them but it doesn't seem to make much difference.

Even with auto gearbox, ideal racing line, traction control, ABS all on and Stability control at 100% I'm still getting blown away in the first race in the career mode.

I've never really had any problems with racing games before so I don't see what the problem is.   I guess I'll keep trying until my patience runs out and then just delete the game as I just can't get a wheel.  Pity though, it looks great.

I think Career Mode is the bigger problem. Personally I never found it too enjoyable or attractive in AC. I've found a lot more joy in this game by the simple act of turning laps on my own and just trying to beat the track; felt a bigger sense of accomplishment in turning an 8:45 around the Nurburgring 24h layout in a GT3 car than with trying anything in career mode. :)

Try random cars in hotlap or practice mode. Should also help you figure out better ways to get these cars around the track using a controller. :)

traction control, ABS all on and Stability control at 100%

Try taking stability control off and if traction control is adjustable reduce it as much as you can, they may have great effect on speed.

(If you adjust traction control from car setup make sure you check which way you have to adjust it. In PC version zero is off, 1 is greatest and biggest number is least. Something I didn't learn before someone told me it.)

I remember taking a 2013 Ferrari F1 car out at the Nordschleife was the moment where I (briefly) fell in love with this game, because up to then I hated it - couldn't drive any of the cars without loads of assists on and even then - remember trying to handle the Porsche GT1-98 and not even being able to make it round a single corner or drive in a straight line - I felt like Felipe Massa circa 2002.

But it was slowing it all down and starting to drive round really gently that kind of got me back on board, because playing around with the steering inputs, the brakes, the throttle, you realise that it's not just ON/OFF like most games (especially on a pad) you open the throttle a certain amount, it's all gradients and actually, when you 'get it' the feeling of freedom when it's just you and the empty track, is exhilarating. You start off slow, you play with different levels of input and build it up lap after lap, then suddenly you can push and it's a process that feels organic and like you're playing an actual simulator rather than a videogame.

Then you switch car/track, its a sh*tshow again and you go back to playing GT Sport or whatever. Career mode is dull, whole thing feels utterly soulless and without any kind of atmosphere and it's so damn inconsistent, I just think it's an infuriating game.

I have the same experience in AC with the Z4 GT3 and somewhat with the 911 GT3-R, probably because they're the only two GT3 cars in the game with a decent default setup. The front-engined monsters (Nissan and Mercedes) are sluggish and understeery, the mid-engined cars (Audi, Ferrari, McLaren) have the least compliant rear axles I have come across (with unbalanced downforce to boot).

If I want a car in AC that I know I can use to attack a track as much as I can, with just a couple of ride height and wing tweaks, I always go back to the Z4.

I don't know the game, but my experience with Gamepad-controllers in racing games is: adapt the speed sensitivity (how quick the sticks or buttons or what have you react to what you do) react to inputs and fiddle around with the deadzone-settings (the area where the stick does nothing).

With my Xbox 360 controller I play rFactor, Gp4 (different mods) and F1 2016. All need fiddling with above mentioned settings.

In Grand Prix 4, for example, I have the deadzone setting of the wheel on on 100 percent... and the steering help completely off. It shouldn't work... but it works. Only at tracks like Monaco I lower the deadzone-setting. Another gem in the setup is the 'reduce with speed'... Also something to look at.

In rFactor I put the digital steering rate 10 percent and the throttle rate at 46 percent and all aids off... otherwise I just sail left and right, creating clouds of wheelspin and I don't know if the input that put me in the wall was me or the steering help kicking too forcefuly.

Another idea: look if it helps to assign a button to switch the auto-clutch on and off (which I presume must be used when you use a controller like a gamepad. I have made it my habit to drive away from the pits with the auto-clutch on, and as soon as I am in second gear, switch it off... In rFactor at least that has helped me A LOT with controlling the car, especially for braking while steering (which, alas, you can't always avoid).

I have sort of same situation, I would much rather attend to a GT3 race in AC with a Ferrari or Lamborghini (just because they are a Ferrari and a Lamborghini) but since I'm so used to BMW I'm sort of stuck with it. So ti's basically quite realistic simulator, in real life I also would prefer a Ferrari or a Lamborghini over a BMW...

I have only played it with a wheel, but I imagine they make very few compromises for controller users compared to something like Gran Turismo Sport.

I tried it with a PS4 controller, impossible. Just get GT Sport unless you have the means for a wheel, PC2 and AC are nigh on impossible with a controller.

I agree, I've given up now.   I also contacted Sony and asked very politely for a refund stating the game is pretty much unplayable without a wheel but was pretty much told "tough ****".

anyway, I guess I didn't pay full price for it, so there's always that.  (as for GT Sport, I was put off the game by the fact its online only and that when playing the career mode, all the race starts are rolling starts.  I really don't like that, prefer standing starts)

Just go online already, why you want to race a machine when there are live people to race against .. i have absolutely no idea.

Like choosing a sex robot over a real woman.

I don't pay for PS+ because I don't play online games.    I used to long ago but not anymore, I just can't don't have patience to deal with the kiddies, idiots, yanks and fools playing their garbage music over the mic.  I'm far happier playing offline.

How you can compare it to sex is ..well I don't have the words.. but, whatever.   Thanks anyway

You can't use mics in Sport Mode or the lobbies in GTS, it's very nice not having to listen to mic spamming idiots.

To echo Mike, GTS is far from perfect but it's pretty damn good for racing. There's a safety rating and speed rating and if you are a S+ safety rating the racing is pretty damn clean. No mic's allowed, no annoying lobbies, just pretty decently balanced racing every 10 or 15 or 25 mins (Races A B and C).

Here's a half decent race, you can see we are a bit sloppy but at least trying not to hit each other. I'm the Aston terrorising everyone on the straights.

Yep, GTS offers some of the best online racing on consoles, especially the FIA races. That is, as long as you get your safety rating high enough though, there are still lots of trashy racers in the lower SR ranks.
