There are too many F3 series.

It's difficult to disagree.

Clement Novalak has been confirmed at Carlin for a second season. Could well be a front runner.

Neil Verhagen has been confirmed at Double R Racing, moving across from Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0.

Source for both: MotorSport Vision website. They also say the races will be live streamed, which has to be good news.

I hope Fortec have got Maldonado's cash safely banked, because at the moment any support coming from Venezuela looks even less credible than Rich Energy's sponosrship of Haas.  Maybe the gold reserves that so-called President Maduro is smuggling out of the country are being tapped?

What a season opener! Saw two of the three races on TV and they were great. 16 isn't a huge field but it's big enough, and the quality is good, with drivers from eight or nine different countries (depending how you count the Swiss-Czech-British Novalak). Lots of good racing, the cars strike a decent balance between power, downforce and ability to follow, good mix of experience and rookies. Even the liveries this year look good; plenty of distinctive but attractive colour schemes. All helped on TV (well, Youtube) by David Addison as commentator.

Next, please.

Am giving this thread a kiss to wake it from its long slumber. Much as I have always loved the light and sophisticated F3 cars of the last decade, I have to say the more recent, slightly tamer F3 cars with simpler aero and more road-based engines have provided terrific racing in a number of series, including British F3.

There's no innate reason why a formula to develop young drivers should not be highly entertaining, and if they have to adapt a little more as they move up, well, that doesn't really matter. British F3 is now almost like a cross between old F3 and Formula Ford, and is much the better for it.

During the next two weekends, British F3 and W Series will both race on the Brands Hatch GP circuit. It's a fabulous track, not the easiest to pass on, but I predict there will be some overtakes and defibrilators will be in demand. Looking forward to spotting the difference between the two. W Series runs 30 or 40 more bhp with a 1.8 turbo rather than a normally aspirated 2.0. The chassis in W Series is a current F3 one whereas the British series uses heavily upgraded F4 underpinnings.

Question: how will those differences affect laptime and the way the cars appear on track?

What we do know is that both series are terrific. Oh, and they're being "supported" by British GT and DTM respectively.
