Every day's a school day!

Why were they racing on a Saturday?

I was preparing an answer that would apply to British GPs. They were held on Saturdays so as not to disturb church services up until the mid-80s.

However I’m not sure why Las Vegas 1981 or South Africa 1983 were, though I’d assume a similar reason.

Japan 1987 was on a Sunday, but Mansell crashed in Q1, making Piquet the champion on Friday.

Well why not? There have been WDC races on every day of the week.

Which ones cover Monday to Friday?

Edit: Wait let me guess. The Indy 500s which at the time were held on Memorial Day proper, rather than at the weekend?

Fittipaldi won in Spain 1972 ish on a Monday.

1965 South Africa was a Friday I think (working from memory here though).

Those pesky Indy 500s cover Tue-Thu.

But most of the times it doesn't do that. Instead it's often about who of the drivers in top cars effed his race up the most, so he has nothing to lose by going for a late stop and cruise to fastest lap with a 2sec tyre advantage.

You can call that a strategic element that exists with this concept of point for FL. Also I dont think that setting Fastest Lap in traffic is easy, the driver who does that (regardless of whatever circumstances) deserves some credit.

They could've run Silverstone's national circuit as that would've left Chapel undisturbed

I must admit I didn't realise until Sunday that if you got the fastest lap but finished outside the top ten then nobody gets the point, presumably to stop anyone just throwing on a new set of tyres with a few laps to go. Unfortunately, as has been mentioned, there's such a big gap between the front two teams and the rest that that's exactly what they can do and not lose a place. With Bottas stopping anyone from getting the point this weekend it feels like it's just become a plaything of the top teams. At the very least surely the point should go to whoever finishes in the top ten and gets the fastest lap of those ten?

It was already done, Perez took Lewis' point in Silverstone exactly the same way. He was actually 10th I think and they sacrificed that point to steal it from Lewis.

I actually think stealing it is fine. The fastest lap point is added to the winning margin, so it's ok to also be stolen

You can hear church bells for miles too but that was OK apparently.

The church bells don't interrupt the service.

They interrupt a Sunday lie-in though.

Indeed up to the late 80's any sport on Sunday was blasphemy here - At least things have changed after that , and the next races ( only 2 ) were held on a totally different layout

Cheers for the South African perspective.

I assume you mean that the two comeback races in 92/93, which were held on the rebuilt circuit, were on Sunday. The next two after 83 were of course 84 and 85.

It was Monday 1st May, which is a holiday in most countries.

In hindsight, a surprising decision by the Francoist regime, since the banned left parties usually promoted civil unrest on that date.
