For what reason will the drivers need a helmet anymore? Give them some extra protection around the cockpit and show us their full faces while racing 

 

Drivers in GT, Touring Cars, Nascar wear helmets. You can still be battered around a fair bit.

Extended discussion of Power and Dixon's test of the aeroscreen.  Quieter inside the car, less buffeting around the helmet, and more forward weight distribution actually may be better on the tires.

This aeroscreen version with integrated halo is supposed to meet the same strength target as the F1 halo, i.e. 150 kN

They must have figured out something because it does have a very similar titanium structure in the aeroscreen.  Note how much the front center support resembles the standard FIA halo

Yes the attachment needed to be different to the halo because the existing chassis couldn't support the required loads through the mounting points behind the cockpit opening, hence it is attached further up on the base of the roll hoop structure instead.

So, which seasons shall we re-watch on youtube to pass the time?

 

Last winter I had fun with the early-mid 1980s, as I wasn't old enough at the time to watch any of it.  

 

Late 1980s Classic CART?  The early 1990s pre-Mansell?  Or the glorious 1995-1999 run of open-wheel racing's peak (and I don't care what F1 fans say, it really was as good as racing ever got)?

Laguna Seca was fun just because it was do different. Milwaukee and Phoenix were always good. Michigan was terrifying when it was basically just guardrail. Riverside stood out for being much less interesting than I thought it would be.

To be fair, the last Riverside race in 1983 wasn't very interesting due to it being on an incredibly hot day, combined with its longer distance than the norm for a road course, which contributed to a very high number of retirements.

 

Besides, Riverside saw enough drama and downright bizarre things in the season ending 1967 and 1968 races to more than make up for a lackluster 1983.

Probably fair, but I can only comment on what I've seen, and the 1981 and 1983 Riverside races were not the most awesome of events.  Other than seeing Brabham run away and hide in the AAR BLAT.

His first employee was my friend Karl Kainhofer and his second was another aquaintance with Mark Donohue. He now employs nearly 65,000 people on (I believe) five different continents. Not bad for this Shaker Heights, Ohio native.

I know this is fodder for the anti-Americanism that permeates this place. If you could refrain from political nonsense and focus on Mr. Penske's numerous accomplishments, it would be appreciated.

He’s a successful business person but based on the criteria used in past administrations and others that have received his accomplishments fall short.  Let’s keep it in perspective.  He sells cars, rents trucks and owns race teams.  I don’t see how that merits an award of that magnitude.  Sergey Brin has done more for society than Penske (and is arguably more successful) but you won’t see the current admin award him for that.

Well done to him. What he's achieved in his career as a racer and a businessman is of the highest standard and any recognition is well deserved. The equivalent for a Brit would be a well deserved knighthood.

He seems to be rather civic-minded to me. That is far from all he does.
