Winning without getting the extra point for leading at least a lap is a gonna be a feat harder than winning the Championship for Rossi/Pagenaud/Dixon

Saw a youtube video from "retro rebel" speaking to Zanardi and asking if he wants to do the 500.. he simply said yes.
How do we make that happen? it has to happen.
Surely BMW have the pennies to back an entry though it would be hard to run as BMW with a honda/chev powered car.

I'd like Rossi to win the title, but I feel I might jinx him.
So I'll be happy with a good enough race and fair fights.

I'll settle for a couple passes, honestly. I'm setting my expectations low and hoping that the race will miraculously exceed them.
Have we ever seen Sato in the corkscrew?

I really don't want to see Zanardi in the Indy 500. Let's be real, Indy is a high level sporting event, not a reality show with inspirational stories. Now in his fifties and with a serious handicap, looking like Kubica would be the best case scenario.

Zanardi and Kubica both suffered disabling injuries, but they're apples and oranges. There's a great deal to admire about both.

Cars with no powersteering are pretty challenging for Kubica, as he's physically very weak with his right arm.
I cannot see him handle an IndyCar at Detroit for example.
Posted 18 September 2019 - 12:53
Zanardi's upper body is fine though, if there's anywhere he could be competitive(or has the best chance to be competitive) it'd be an oval.
But yeah it would make things look....it wouldn't help the image of racing not being athletic.
Posted 18 September 2019 - 13:16
I dare say there are very few drivers, if any, who are more athletic than Zanardi - the man has won multiple hand bike championships/Paralympic Gold Medals, and is a triathlete and a beast. I wouldn't bet against him taking on any of the current driver crop in an arm wrestling match!

Even if he was competitive and earned a spot on the grid through pace?
The point is that he won't be competitive. He's been out of the sport for 18 years, and even 18 years ago he wasn't exactly on form. If he were competitive in 2020, even with both legs intact, it would be an indictment on Indycar's legitimacy as a sport, to be honest. It's not just the age, it's the period of absence as well.

We’ll get there tomorrow night to be ready for Fri. I haven’t been to the track in 15 years or so. Don’t know what the mobile coverage is out there so I’m hoping it’s enough LTE for pics. It’s the entire Road to Indy ladder plus MX5 Cup and Porsche GT.

I found the coverage quite spotty in 2016 for the Road to Indy finale, that was on AT&T I believe. We’ll get there tomorrow night to be ready for Fri. I haven’t been to the track in 15 years or so. There are two T-Mobile towers just outside the track according to cellmapper.net both with LTE. The terrain is pretty hilly and according to the responses that have been there (cellmapper has an app that pings the mothership with your strength, etc) the campground we’re in is pretty good but as you get down into the bowl the coverage is less than desirable. Verizon is worse, the nearest tower looks to be a mile or so from the track. Sprint and AT&T fare a bit better than Verizon but it’s still lacking. What JP was saying about Verizon should be true even if they have to bring portable towers. I can’t see them having a cell desert at a race they sponsor. That would be like having Johnsonville sponsor RA and not having brats at the track.
It will be hammer down tomorrow after we get the RV. Pickup is pushed back to 1:45 (13:45 in new money) so we’ll be lucky to make the midnight gate closing. If so I’ll just park at the entrance or at the Walmart in Salinas and boogie in for 7am gate. Because, well, RV. We’ve got until 10:30 Fri morning for the first session and when I’m at the track I DO NOT MISS AN ICS SESSION. I used to even do morning warm up on Sun but thankfully they’ve made that into Fri pit stop practice.

There was no drama here since JoNew already secured the title, but the fight for the 2nd turned out to be very interesting with Rossi barely edging out Dixon. This brings another fun season to a close, now we have to survive the long wait until St. Pete next year...

Also, a reminder that the Amelia Island Concours in March will be honoring the cars and career of Roger Penske.

I was considering going to Road America or Iowa, but with the Richmond announcement and the Red Stick Civil War tour being announced that has definitely become a strong candidate.

Have you been to the Richmond area? I've largely seen the sites to the north and east of Richmond (North Anna, Stuart Memorial, Cold Harbor, Gaines Mill, Malvern Hill, ), not so much the south and west (Petersburg, The Crater, Pamplin Park, Sayler's Creek, other Lee's Retreat sites). At some point we'll have to gauge folk's interest in what to include.

No, closest I've been is JFK, second closest would be Mt. Pleasant, SC I do like history though, and the American civil war isn't that well covered on schools in Denmark, besides the North/south and slave issue.
I'd like to go if there's interest. Loved the Indy 500 with JP and DJparky + the Rolex24 with PaulB. It's nice to meet the people on here in real life.

Glad that the "right" guy won the championship after all. Pagenaud would only have been champ due to double point shenanigans at Indy and Laguna Seca, and I can't help that it would have left a slightly froggy taste in my mouth...
