I was shockingly surprised by this. Charlie Whiting has been part of my living memory of 20 years of Formula 1. For someone like me (and most of us), he was part of the furniture of our sport, of our show, even, if you want, of our dreams.

My thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Rest in Peace, Charlie.

RIP, such a shame that happened to him, long flights are a huge risk for those. Really unfortunate.

Crikey that is a massive shock.

Charlie Whiting was a massive figure in the sport, one of the very last of the old guard of Formula One. He probably knew more about F1 than most of the paddock put together, and I would have dearly loved to chat with the man. It’s a shame his public role who limited to “the guy who presses the button”, as there is no doubt he’ll leave a massive hole on the grid this weekend.

Best wishes to his friends and family.

Bloody hell, that's awful. RIP Charlie. Sounds as though he had a DVT possibly due to the flight.

Bloody hell, this is incredibly sad. There aren’t many bigger figures on race day than Charlie. It’s a massive loss to Formula One. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Vale.

Someone will have massive shoes to fill.

According to AMuS Scott Elkins, his deputy, will take over his duties for this weekend. There is also Tombazis and Bayer in theory.

Absolutely shocking. Utterly tragic that he passed at such a small age. A huge loss to the F1 community, and his family of course.

RIP Charlie.

Sad news for his friends, family and fans. I certainly didn't want him to die., but I did want him to step away from his role.

Sad news. Charlie is as synonymous to F1 as the 5 red lights. It would feel weird without him there.

Saddened by this. I didn't know him on a personal level, I'm not most of us didn't, but it's still sad to hear this and makes me feel a little less excited about the opening race this weekend.

Shocked and saddened to read this news. I know Charlie was the cause of much derision on this forum, but you can't deny the massive contribution he's made to the sport of F1.

The fact that it has happened not just before the start of the season, but - more importantly - on the other side of the world to his family and home makes it even more wrenching...

RIP Charlie
