Does not one build redundancy into systems anymore?

That costs money - so probably not.

The accountants rule... and not the programmers...

Wow, what a way of finishing the season, absolute perfection.

His FL's on old tyres is becoming the norm for him, astonishing stuff.

i guess it just shows how much pace he had left in hand. He could have gone a lot faster over the race distance, they were just managing the race

What a feat for the team and for Lewis. Still very much a driver in his prime I only hope he has more poles next season and more competition. Well done to all involved.

As for Lewis to Ferrari, why? Just look at the last race they had in comparison to Merc.

Everyone is hitting the reset button for 2021. No one knows what the pecking order will be.

... save for the PU. And Ferrari still seems to have the advantage on that front, despite the countless technical directives.

That could be used to justify or rationalize almost any move. Nonetheless, Lewis is in a position to take risks and a move to Ferrari would be box office for F1 for a year or two, or maybe longer.

yes, lol. And it would be pure box office.  If I was the FIA, I would be shoveling money and incentives to get Lewis to move to Ferrari. The Netflix would explode.  Monza would be INSANE.

Hamilton to Ferrari would be the biggest thing since Schumacher and Senna.

I'm not for it but if it occurred I could see it being a $100,000,000 contract, especially if he goes there as a 7-time WDC winner.

It would be extremely ironic if Ferrari were the ones to help Hamilton break Schumacher's record :rotfl:.

Knowing how Ferrari did this year, it will probably be like this:

Hamilton has won seven races up to Spa, so he's tied with Schumacher. Ferrari is running 1-2 in Monza, then they crash into each other, leaving Hamilton to take a win.

The full F1 paddock put them in the lower midfield after the first test week and over a second behind Ferrari, this does sound like a heap for Mercedes standards to me.

Yeah, I guess so. It's very important for Monster, I saw a tweet that SkyF1 would film though, but don't know what.

Sky are doing a feature on it but don’t know when it’s being shown.

Lewis has said that they had a great time - Instagram

So Rossi was 1.5 s off Lewis and Lewis 4 s off Rossi. In Valencia where Moto GP is racing. That's quite respectable.

Yep, 2 master craftsmen. Like Rossi I hope Hamilton sticks around long enough to be attempting to win a tenth title.

Having ridden bikes and done a small amount of car racing and track days I wish I could ride a bike like Vale and drive a car like Lewis.   Impressed with Lewis on the bike, I knew Rossi of course is speedy in a car, but I hadn't seen Lewis ride before. Colin McCrae was pretty handy on a bike.

Nice to get so many world championships together for that!

Also didn't expect the A-team to see there with Vowles and Bono. You would think they would send another group after a long season, but I think they were all excited for it.

This is legit one of the worst memes F1 has ever created, and it creates many bad memes

Asked by Autosport at the conclusion of the season how big of a step he needed to dethrone Hamilton next year, Bottas said: "The fact is, I think competition is only going to get tougher between the top three teams.

"So, for sure beating Lewis is always hard, but it means also beating the other drivers.

"But I know I have the speed in me and the ability so I don't think I need to make any miracles.

"I need to fine-tune everything - so, let's say 'Bottas 2.77', maybe."

Huge development.

Mercedes going for greater efficiency by adopting the Ferrari-style high-top sidepods.

Will allow for a larger undercut, better diffuser performance (efficient downforce), and less-aggressive RW setups.

Mercedes stopped the development on the 2019 car very early.

If they manage to combine the strengths of 2019 with a better engine and some updated downforce/efficency in 2020, I expect even more dominance.

Allison didn't want to say it, but I still remember Wolff saying after Hungary that they stopped development of the car. Now you can argue that's the same for the other teams, but they have a gap to close, Mercedes don't have to + a long close WDC/WCC battle wouldn't allow them to fully focus on 2020 so soon.

With only one year left on the current regs, a design change like that would suggest to me that the design team have finally reached a point where they believe their previous car concept to have reached its full potential. I'm definitely more hyped for the W11 launch now.

No need to worry alframsey.  Most other teams use this configuration including Red Bull and we know how strong that chassis became once the designers got their heads around it and sorted the teething problems.

Ferrari pioneered this style of sidepod inlet on their 2017 car, which had an incredible chassis, but was still lagging behind on the PU front.

It wasn't Ferrari's sidepod design that let them down in 2019.

Merc need greater aero efficiency, and this design will help facilitate it.

I highly doubt Mercedes would be stupid enough to be spilling the beans on the 2020 car through seat fitting pics. This is a red herring and Scarbs is reading way too much into it.

What's so stupid about it and how exactly does it help other teams?

Also, you really think they made a separate chassis just to deceive everyone with a seat fitting pic on social media?

What would it change for the others?  What can they do now?  Redesign 6 months too late?

Teams will go their own ways concept wise, each team has a different mentality towards getting the faster more efficient car!

I really doubt that they would change their design philosophy even if Merc would have shown the entire car all together... of course if there are some clever tricks or innovations you don't want others to know but showing only this picture I doubt will change much.

Scarbs did this for the 2018 season as well.

And it correctly predicted that Merc would be retaining conventional sidepods.

This clearly signals a new architecture.  And it's not giving anything away to rivals.  Time's up to react, and what would they react to?  Merc's the last to adopt this approach.  They probably reached the end of the development path for the old, conventional sidepods.

It also makes sense, because Merc's biggest problem last year was efficiency, and the high-top sidepods help with efficiency by creating a larger undercut and allowing the resulting airflow to work the rear diffuser harder and allow for less RW AoA.

It's essential to have a model of the "real" car to make sure that with all of the 2020 packaging, everything is going to fit properly and nothing will bother the driver in the cockpit from a design standpoint.

Comparison of the new (for 2020) with the old (for 2019), via Scarbs:
