May as well get the 2019 Rnault thread started, The place to talk about the drivers, team members etc.

Personally, I think Dan and Hulk will be well matched early in the season but. that Ricciardo to win the battle over the course of the season.

Good to have a dedicated Renault thread like this. Looking forward to the battle. Will take Dan time to get used the car but I agree he should have the edge over Hulk by the end of the season.

Yep and we know they have at least mid 1:23's in them given FP2 times yesterday

Well not sure what to make of that session. Haas ahead of Renault and RBR is a surprise. Hopefully we have more left up our sleeves. Sadly it looks like Merc and Ferrari with daylight between the rest of the field. Dan edges out Hulk for once.

Why two threads?

Renault and RB respectively slower and as slow as yesterday.

I wouldn't judge anything until they are at a racetrack, too many variables in Melbourne to get an accurate read even after qualification, we may glean some information about cars which deal with very changeable track conditions well.

Probably better having this thread for driver/team talk and the other thread for purely Renault car tech talk now I guess.

I agree about Merc/Ferrari then daylight. I still think RBR will be 3rd best and 3 or 4 tenths quicker than Renault and Haas. 7th and 8th this weekend and being closer to RBR than last season would be a good result imho.

If you read the announcements pinned at the top of RC, you might see what we’re aiming for this year. Vs threads were becoming a nightmare.

Well thats disappointing both guys miss Q3. Haas wow. Just shows how good those Ferrari parts are. Hopefully our race pace is better and tyre wear helps us beat some of those teams marginally ahead.

Disappointing qualifying for Renault. Out in Q2 and 1.5secs behind the top dogs..  ):

Hulk takes 1-0 lead in Q.

I wish it was true. Now it just confirms the Renault is only quicker than Toro Rosso and Williams. This is just grim.

We are slower than Haas, Mclaren, Force India, and Alfa Romeo.  Just brutal.

Watched Dan's onboard from last lap in Q2 and looks like he had a slow exit from last corner before starting the lap, so perhaps his slow S1 was from that??

Edit: also just saw his interview and seems I was right, although it also affected his confidence and tyre temp for taking T1 at full speed too

I think its going to take a few races for him to get comfortable with the differences between the Red Bull and Renault cars. Still today was extremely close between both guys. Really looking forward to see what both guys can do in the race. I still think Renault have car and drivers to be 4th best team tomorrow.

With what we know of Dan the expectation should be that he will win out between Hulk and him, but as a Hulk fan I hope he comes out on top. Right now however Dan has a lot more learning to do with how Renault operates, and that will be a setback for him for a while. Early season it should be advantage Hulk, after that I have no idea.

That wasn't what I expected to be honest. I expected Dan to be 0.5 sec in front of the Hulk.

Hamilton doesn’t average 0.5 over Bottas across the course of a season. Why would Dan be that far ahead of Hulk?

Just because some driver are stuck in midfield cars, doesn't mean they're slow.

Hulk won fair and square, but ricciardo has admitted he has not learnt how to set the car up the best yet, so I do expect him to improve. It's not really an excuse for yesterday though.

Expecting Dan to be 0.5 ahead is very unfair to Hulk. I think they are evenly matched at this point and even when Dan does find his feet he won't be half a second quicker. There won't be much more than a couple of tenths between them in qualifying this year imho. I expect Dan to shade Hulk over the course of the season but there won't be much between them.

Whilst the result was disappointing, Hulk has looked pretty good all weekend.  His Q2 time was slower than Q1, so with track evolution I expect he could have found quite a bit of time on his 2nd run, I guess we'll never know.  I expect him to have a strong race though.  At his supposed value, Ricciardo cant afford time to get up to speed vs Hulk.  Anyone thinking Ricciardo was going to constantly put 0.3 sec on Hulk hasn't been watching Hulk over the last 8 years...

I have no clue why people think Ricciardo is going to dust Hulk.  It's not like we are comparing to a Jolyon Palmer (with no disrespect to Palmer).  Hulk has always been near the limit of the car and regardless of what happened at Force India, he has come to this Renault team and drove the limit of the car. People grow, they don't stay the same. Hulk had his best season last year. What can Ricciardo do with his two feet that is going to get him so far ahead of Hulk.

I don't think anyone has stated that Dan will be constantly 0.3 sec ahead of Hulk. It's a very good driver pairing imho.  And now that the driver weight limit has increased, Hulk should be a little better off.

Like i saiid, i think Dan will win the driver battle over the entire season, but not by much.

Enjoy it ya lucky bastard!  :p

My schedule is lunch, watch a bit of the coverage, swim in the pool and then back inside for the race in 4K on the big screen TV with a few beers. Not too bad, but being at the track in good seats would be awesome today though.   :D

Hope we have something to cheer about at the end of the race today. Go boys!
