Alfa went worse every session, seems like a tyreheat problems and this is a track were it's a big problem, could be a good for the race though.

Well it went well until Q3.....too bad for Gio that he still has that penalty. But atleast Kimi is again in position to take good points tomorrow, just have to survive first lap...and propably not waste time trying to keep Leclerc behind.

Yeah, that's a tall order considering Kimi's race on both 2017 and 2108 was almost done at turn 2. Both times he was perhaps a bit timid, a bit generous and got bitten for it. He just got very lucky in 2018..

So team likely has told him to let Mercedes duo by and try to take tow or etc.

Gio had a good day, too bad about the grid penalty.

Starting p8 is not bad. Usually the Alfa has better racepace so I'm quite optimistic. An underdeveloped Racing Point in p5 just proves how mighty that Merc engine still is.

Hopefully they will stay far away from the Torpedo at the start and good points can be scored.

Sounds like all the faffing around about the tow caused more of a hindrance for Kimi. That being said it was still not a good lap, unless he just backed off completely. Still, P8 isn't a disaster and today will be a huge boost for Gio.

It's interesting that Giovinazzi starts to perform at the same time as Leclerc did last season.

Gio will be fine. He outperformed Kimi today and it's worth bearing in mind that he was the one to give Kimi a tow in Q2 and then did not get a tow from Kimi in return but was lucky and got one from Seb instead which worked out nicely for him. I think Alfa pretty much were prepared to sacrifice Gio's quali to aid Kimi because of the grid penalty so it may well have been a shock for them to see him make it into Q3 in the first place. Gio was out first in Q3 to give Kimi the tow for the first run but Kimi messed up and it didn't work out then in the last run Gio got out ahead of Kimi again but I think Norris got in between them, then Alfa told Kimi to fall back behind both Mercedes to get a tow from them. It was a bit of a mess today but a really solid job from Gio nevertheless.

Kimi seemed a bit off his game today but 9th is not bad for an 'off' day. Think the team just got caught up in the 'tow' scenario and overcomplicated matters.

They should maybe have run the Verstappen strategy with Kimi in Q3, who knows... It's clear he had the speed to do better, but it's not a bad position to start. Hopefully getting back P4 in the WCC from Renault tomorrow

Yeah they got drawn into the towing scenario needlessly. It wasn't really necessary to send Gio out in Q3, luckily he made it unscathed but if he had crashed a la Kubica and Leclerc with the grid penalty it would have been a disaster. As it is he's used another set of tyres and has gained one place so it was messy strategy from Alfa today which they need to sort out in future. Kimi has never qualifed well here and last year made mistakes which cost him pole so I was actually pretty happy with him getting into the top ten to be honest, it's just a tad disappointing because I feel he could have challenged at the very least for 6th place. Never mind though, the race pace looked solid so fingers crossed for points for BOTH tomorrow!

Indeed.  Well both Charles and Gio seem to have an infatuation with Baku anyway. Both arguably had there most momentous results here in in the past.

Still have to wait for Barcelona so Gio can hopefully get some ammo to go at the press with  :rotfl:

Just here to say.

YAY GIO!
Great quali performance today, finally showing his talent and a well deserved boost of motivation after a difficult start.

A shame for the penalty, but Baku GP is Long & Crazy.

Kimi, ultra consistent, as always he'll bring big points.

Car looking good here. GIO very unlucky with his penalty and Kimi got screwed with strategy, but this track has a massive straight and the Alfa have good speed, so they should be able to make up places and get points.

There better be some crashes upfront and safety cars for the two Alfa boys... This would have been a glorious opportunity to score big had they started P8/9.

Well ****.....Alfa really ****ed up this weekend.....like said the only good thing about this is that atleast now Kimi is sure to get clean start to the race, but his only chance to take good points is if there will be lots of crashes in front of him and if Alfa can get the strategy just right compared to other teams and get lucky with safety car.

Can he change tyres as he basically now is like he didn't participate in qualy? They should put hards on then...

Well I would imagine the answer is no since he was disqualified.....if it was some technical problem, then ofc he would be allowed to do that, but I would imagine that in this case he wont be allowed to even have that advantage with tyres.

Since he was disqualified, it would be as if not having participated in the qualification at all, meaning he can choose whatever tire he wants. Atleast thats how I understand it,

Besides, what are they going to do? Give him a penality and mocw him down 10 places on the startgrid? :)

Well if he can indeed chose whatever tyres he wants, then atleast thats 1 more positive side to it....anyhow Kimi better hope for chaotic start, cause otherwise its going to be really difficult to make it to top 10, even if Alfa has been quick and its very much possible to overtake on this track, cause that midfield is otherwise so tight. Anyhow lets hope that this would be "blessing in disguise" if there is going to be crashes in the midfield during lap 1, as there has been during last 2 years.

How on earth its possible that only Raikkonen had "illegal" wing when both drivers had the same spec aero parts?

According to Sauber (quote by AMuS) the reason is that Raikkonen's wing is older by the way, apparently flexibility increased with more running. There were no problems at all with Giovinazzi's newer wing

Ok, so Kimi apparently hasn't liked new FW but will have to use it now.

I think points are very much possible, if tactic is good and they avoid collissions.

This weekend the team was kind of bonkers, they should have started with the Mediums.

No speed at all with this FW.

On friday long runs were very good, easily better than Haas and Renault and now they can't keep up with them.

Well did not see a points finish! Difficult weekend BUT a much better showing from Gio and okay, some luck with Gasly, Ricciardo and Kvyat all retiring but another solid job from Kimi to get a point.
