We have a French man at our slot club.  Last night an argument ensued - not about Brexit, for a change - but about a corner on a race circuit.

He insisted that there was a corner at the Charade circuit called Nouveau Monde.  He refused to accept that although the corner he described was a corner at Clermont Ferrand, it almost certainly wasn't called Nouveau Monde.

I pointed out that Nouveau Monde was a corner at Rouen, but he insisted that it was Charade.

Obviously, I KNOW there was a corner at Rouen with that name but does anyone know of there was indeed a corner at Charade with the same name.

There's a euro hanging on this!

Just use the Paddock Club cry...

"Without pics, BS!"

And here's your obligatory proof pic:

I know, the one on the cover of Motor Sport with Dan in the Brabham looked a lot better.

But was it on the cover of Motor Sport?

Maybe it was, the first issue I ever bought was the one with three cars at the Nurburgring that year on the cover.

And while we're at it, you can see here how widening of the main road (the downhill one) has cut the distance across the cobblestone section.

Yes, yes, this is all very well, but it isn't answering the question.

Well all know about the Rouen one but was there a Nouveau Monde at Charade?

Who has the best maps?

Maybe Oscar knows? He might have a map with corner names...

There are several threads on the French Autodiva forum which mention both Nouveau Monde and Charade.

But they are all concerned with the circuit at Rouen ...

It's always more difficult to prove something does not exist, than to prove that it does. So, nothing conclusive, but:

I have before me the Plan du Circuit 1958 in "Charade - le plus beau circuit du monde, 1958 - 2002" by Patrice Besqueut. Not every corner is named, but there's no "Nouveau Monde." Also there's no such name on the separate map of the short circuit. Also, I like to think I would have noticed such a coincidence when I was there for the 1970 French GP, and walked the circuit.

One Euro to Mr Bloor, I think.

Well spotted Chris, I hadn't noticed how similar Scierie was, at first glance, to Nouveau Monde. A triangle of grass but, of course, no steep banking. This collection of 'Google Search' pictures shows both corners in 1962.

https://www.google.c...=C30SVx_cpiGh1M:

I think Nouveau Monde has the small hedge and Dunlop banner, while Scierie has a bare triangle of grass and a prominent raised marshalls' post.

Yes I was wrong, although I was there! Dan's first GP win and Porsche's only GP win, although they did it again a week later in non-championship Solitude.

In my defence I looked at much of the track from start/finish to Sanson, but then the race started so I never explored further.

Wouldn't you think that Sanson must have been a very critical corner?

I thought so, especially for the 1.5-litre cars.

Sorry, Barry, drifting away again! Wasn't it always the case?

I used to have detailed diagrams of Charade, issued by the Automobile Club down in central Clermont-Ferrand. I don't recall any Nouveau Monde.

The first time we visited Charade was in 1978 and, after a couple of blasts around the old 'track', we set up our tent alongside the road, just off a wooded part of the circuit, on the far side of the hill, a few miles from the start/finish area. A couple of cars came past in the dusk but, just when I was transferring spaghetti from colander to plates, a howling Renault screamed past. The spaghetti ended up in the grass but, scooped out with a couple of forks, it tasted fine, benefitting from the added greens.

Hello Barry,

Did your "ami francais" specify it as being at Charade or just Clermont Ferrand ?

If the latter there were a couple of tracks thereabouts so maybe it could've been a corner at one of those ?

Cheers

Chris

Definitely Charade, Chris.

Oddly, I've had no reply since I sent him my evidence.
