How many compounds are GP2 drivers given for a full weekend?

Qualifying is usually a 2 tyre set affair, yes?

Latifi's lap is definitely beatable.

Aitken was on course to but had a poor final sector.

Track evo and cooling temps...

8 mins to go and Latifi, on provisional pole, is out of tyres and out of the car.

Gelael in Ferrari cofirmed.

Ghiotto is my title favourite.

Shame for that Lock up for Mick, lost at least half a second that should have put him in Top 5.

Ghiotto smashes it with a late lap.

Messy trembles in fear and despair at the news of Gelael P7.

Big lockup by Schumacher on his last flying lap.

Seems like experience of the series/car/track was a huge advantage here? Mick top rookie in 10th if I'm reading this correctly?

Yeah they always say experience is key in F2(GP2) and that shows from this qualifying will be interesting to see how that trend goes over the course of the season.

Calderon 1.3 seconds off her fellow rookie team mate. Did she not get a late lap in?

So F2 qualifying isn't exactly thrilling. I'm glad F1 has these 3 segments.

F2 qualifying with F1 style knockouts would be great fun, shame it won't ever happen due to costs/timing etc

Maybe just do 2 segments then? Why do you think the costs would be different?

Just assuming they would use more fresh sets of tyres etc

But equally could just use one set and see how it goes

It’s not so bad when you can do multiple laps on one tyre but here it was crap as the tyres were done after one lap. 2 fast laps in 30 minutes is not so great. Just give them another set of soft tyres.

Nah, the poor drivers already get such little running with just 1 short FP session before this, making it even worse for them is a bad idea I think. This way at least they have 30 mins to try to build up to a lap.

Wow, fastest final sector from Schumacher, he would've been quick without his mistake.

I like her and all but I think this is maybe what happens when you promote a driver who's scored nothing more than occasional minor points in GP3 up a level. Hope she proves me wrong.

Oh God, Gelael was 7th? ****.

Very close between the reigning F3 (Schumacher) and GP3 (Hubert) champions - should be a nice battle to follow as the season progresses.

Best S3 of anyone for Schumacher, recorded in his first quali attempt.

Shame for that big lockup!
He also did a 25.3 in his final lap despite that huge flatspot, so...could have been quite a good lap.

Looks like experience counts a little bit this season.
Last year everyone has started from 0 considering the new car's debut, while this year the more experienced drivers (pretty much everyone in top 10  ) will have an initial advantage.

But will be closer & closer as the championship progresses, could be a tight one.

I'm following GP2/F2 since it started in 2005. and this year's grid is probably the worst of them all. Of course I'm still going to watch it because I'm still expecting races to be exciting, but damn, not a single F1 level talent here. When Gelael finishes 7th in quali, you know quality of the grid is poor...

But on the other side F3 grid is mega strong, one of the strongest ever, so many great exciting talents there. Very much looking forward to it.

Schumacher needs to aim for the trusty 8,1 pattern now this weekend surely.

He looked pretty promising actually, shame about blowing his best lap.

Well, Gelael has been there since the Mesozoic, had multiple F1 tests with Toro Rosso & even scored a podium at Monaco despite last year's super grid  :smoking:

Still. would have been outqualified by his teammate, without that lockup! (his bad, tho!)

But the last sector is basically two straights, the first two are the most interesting part where Mick was pretty average

yes, but Schumacher is in the probably best team on the grid, while unfortunately Hubert is in the worst one

Hubert is one of the best talents on the grid, I wish he was in ART or Prema, that would be exciting to watch, but sadly he is in the freakin' Arden, top 10 at the end of the season would be miracle...

So is sector one, two corners.

His T2 was very competitive actually in his first quali attempt, in line with De Vries's first attempt (44.0 de vries)
You can't judge his T2 in the final lap, as he had a huge flatspot & came wide out of that corner after the lockup.

He was a bit off in Sector 1 only, maybe he doesn't have 100% trust on the brakes yet .

Hubert is a pretty good damn driver, maybe a little bit old for a F2 rookie but nothing dramatic.

And if Russell and Aitken hadn't both beaten him as team-mates 2 years ago.

Actually, Sean had TWO podiums: one in F2 Monaco, and one when it was still GP2 in Austria 2016. Mick's setup did work a bit TOO well for him here haha. KFC bonus incoming for Mick i guess

Well... Trident was the only team last year not to have a podium. Their best finish was 5th. Arden even had one victory and a 2nd place.
