I've been watching F1 since Monaco 1970 (Where I fell in love with the sport and became a fan of a certain Mr Rindt)

I'd love to calculate how many I've seen but I'm too lazy to figure it out.  From my beginnings in 70 we only got 'highlights' so I'm not sure if you can count the first few races or season or two.  but I've pretty much watched every race since (missed two in 2001 but I was in hospital and unconscious so not my fault for missing them)

Didnt they turned this in that year into a night race because of the 900th GP+10 years anniversary?

It seems they did it (primarily) for the 10 year anniversary. Can't find a link saying they did it for the 900 GP celebration.

One of the first Grand Prix i watched from start to finish was the '92 Monaco Grand Prix (I was 16 in 1992, so i've been following F1 for all my "grown" life). Saw a few others that season, but didn't start watching full time until the 1993 season. Before that i only caught a few clips from races in the sports news as i only had the norwegian national broadcaster available. If i hadn't had access to satellite tv in 1992 i wouldn't have been able to develop my interest for F1, and it might never been the obsession it has become....  From that year on though, i've seen almost every grand prix (i won't say every, as there might have been a race or two that have got away), most of them live - and when circumstances have made it impossible i have taped them to watch as soon as possible afterwards. I've also seen a few "replays" of 80s and 70s races now and then, but not that many. Haven't bothered with the math though, so exactly how many i have watched i don't know :)

On seeing JG's post, I had a look and came up with 1013. As you rightly say, there were 11 Indianapolis 500's. The other 2, unless I've also miscounted, could be Spain 1980 and South Africa 1981 which were both withdrawn from the championship.

So I guess it's the 1000th GP according to these criteria:

- It's called a Grand Prix (which excludes the "Sweepstake" Indy 500s)

- It's a confirmed WDC event (which excludes the 1980 Spanish GP, the 1981 SA GP and also e.g. the 19712 Argentinian GP)

F1 or F2 (1952/53) don't matter.

Haven't seen them all, but have been following Formula One since about Championship Race #103, it was the beginning of 1962. Living in Australia, TV was not an option, so I had a subscription to Motoring News from England that I devoured cover to cover. The AARC had film nights where we saw highlights of some of the races. Wondered if I should continue following the sport after losing Jim Clark. But here I am, today, somewhat disillusioned, but still compelled to follow...

It’s not the 1,000th GP. As Ensign pointed out above, it’s the 1,000th WDC race. Of these:

974 were (or will be) F1 Grands Prix
15 were F2 Grands Prix
11 were races run to USAC rules

So we should be celebrating the 8th Grand Prix of 2020 as "our" official 1000th GP. If the Dutch Grand Prix returns, it could very well be that Grand Prix to host the 1000th. It fits in the slot of June. France/Canada this season.

Strictly speaking AAA until 1955, but I think it was pretty much the same guys in charge, just with nicer official jackets.

There gave been run much much than a 1000 grand prix already.

Since the first race of the new F1 World Championship was won by Nino Farina in an Alfa Romeo, wouldn't it be great if Alfa Romeo Racing brought such a car along to China ? There is at least one in the Alfa Romeo museum in Italy.

My first recollection of watching a race was Belgium 1998.

The first year I followed the championship entirely was 2000.

I must have missed an average of 2 to 3 races per year ever since.

I wouldn't know for sure, but given what others have said, I'd guess between 300-400, based on the fact that I've been following since the mid-to-late 90s.

In recent years, I've not watched nearly as regularly as I used to due to a couple of factors - the first being the Sky TV deal (I don't have Sky and have no interest in subscribing, since I don't watch much TV anyway) and a general dissatisfaction with the quality of the sport. I'm a bit more interested this year, purely to see how some of the rookies and guys like Leclerc get on.

And why is this relevant for the 1000th Grand Prix if I may ask? Because Farina won the first official Grand Prix with this car?

My first race was 215, Silverstone 1972, on TV. It is amazing to realize that I have watched more than 3 thirds of all championship races.

My first full season was 1990. That's how much over 500?

I might have missed 30 GPs.

Same here, can't believe I have seen 50% of grand prix contested and been watching for 30 years.

First live race was Argentina '98 which then immediately prompted me to buy the video reviews for '94 onwards.

Completely unbroken viewing through to Belgium 2001 which I remember being devastated that I'd have to listen to on R5L on our way home from holiday.

Recently....I've missed quite a lot then fast forwarded a lot of them I'm afraid to say. But I've usually managed to avoid seeing the result and watched them 'as live' at X30 with nothing happening and Hamilton winning.....

There was also a CGI message on the start-finish straight to this effect throughout the race.

I never missed a race live since France 2003.

Started following with consistancy from 1997.

I started following ("watching" regularly came several years later) since Monaco 1972.

My best memory is Monaco 1984, with Senna pushing the limits of that oxcart-like Toleman under monsoonic conditions.

Still remember the Epic 500th GP in Adelaide 1990. Senna crashed out due to a faulty gearbox and Piquet defeated Mansell on totally shot tires.

I have an old anniversary Jacket someone gave me from that event.

I’ve watched nearly every race since Belgium ‘98 which was the race that got me hooked. Since then I think the only race I’ve completely missed was Hungary ‘06.

I was a Jenson Button fan at the time.

(I have a feeling I may have missed Turkey ‘08 too but that wasn’t as interesting)

Great idea. At least one was restored to raceworthy condition and was sold to a private owner, Mike Sparken, in the nineteen eighties. Actually, I think it was assembled from original parts by Alfa apprentices. Saw (and heard!) it demonstrated at Silverstone. Don't know where it is now but it would be good to see it put through its paces. Probably half a dozen other cars from the race are still in running order, mostly ERAs, but I'm sure a Maserati and Talbot or two are still racing.

I don't actually know how many races I've seen. I was born in 1987 and my dad was an avid race watcher already by then, so would have me in a bouncer seat or whatever with the race on the screen, I had F1 t-shirts as a kid and knew plenty about the drivers and teams, but I don't really recall the first race I can actually remember sitting down and watching. But I guess I've seen whether remembered or not most races since 87. The three races I missed were the 97 Hungarian GP (listened to it on the radio in the car though), and the 2016 Spanish and German GPs.

1000 GPs is mad, especially when you think Schumacher has won almost 1 in every 10 GP ever held, and Hamilton isn't far behind. 2 drivers winning over 15% of all F1 races ever. Madness.

It's impossible to say how many races I've missed over the years due to family or work commitments, and also how many I watched before I properly started following the sport. 1996 was the first season I watched properly.

I hope not. Not because there's anything wrong with noting/celebrating 1000 races or this thread in any way but just because race build up threads are fun, and the Chinese GP seems like it deserves its own thing.

Let's not forget that some WDC races contained combined F1 and F2 fields in the late 60s.

Those events were separate F1 and F2 races run concurrently. The F2 cars didn’t comply with F1 rules (specifically with regard to minimum weight) and hence they (and their drivers) were ineligible to score points in their respective F1 championships.

Chances that Pirelli will randomly throw in some special 1000th GP compound à la Maldonado Spain 2012?

It'll take a hell of a special compound to get George Russell to win in China.

I've been watching regularly since I was about 5 in 1983. I haven't watched every race live but there hasn't been a race since then that I haven't watched at least highlights of.

Edit - So it would be over 600 races for me, easily most of them.

my 1st watched race was Monaco 2002. watched it on sat TV on French TF1 since F1 was not FTA in the MENA region. I remember watching a few races each season but just for fun. My first full season was 2007.

I still miss the odd race or two due to timezone difference

In the F1 crazy statistics race, PayasYouRace pointed out that the 1959 German Grand Prix consisted of two heats.

This means that this season's Chinese Grand Prix:

  • Is not the 1,000th Grand Prix,
  • Nor is it the 1,000th Formula 1 race,
  • And neither is it the 1,000th World Championship race
  • But it is the 1,000th World Championship event

:drunk:

There seems to be a good chance Mercedes will sneak past Williams this year. Not bad in half a decade. Well, bad for F1, but a good score nonetheless.

24 race victories remaining. realistically seen; I'd say 2021 is the season where this could happen the earliest.

Edit: Coming to senses.. 2020 would be a better guess.
