As always, a nice op OvDrone :)

Long Beach used to be my 'local', when racing first started there we liveed about a mile or so south of the corner of Ocean Blvd and Shoreline drive at 2nd and Redondo. When our son was born, at Long Beach Memorial Hospital, we decided to move a little inland to a bedroom community called Lakewood which was still on a 15 minute commute to the track.

Just one story from an earlier time when F1 raced there. I was able to purchase a 'photographers pass' for about $100, now let me hasten to add that I am no photographer, merely a point and click guy, however the pass got me into the garage, into the pits between practice sessions and onto a few very overcrowded small grandstands strategically located around the track. Also back then Ocean Blvd was where the pits were and Ocean Blvd was 'pit straight. The Shoreline Drive straight also started at Ocean Blvd back then. Any way during an F1 practice session I decided to walk to the end of Ocean Blvd where they came up the hill and turned left onto Ocean Blvd, my intent was to see if I could catch anyone lifting the right front as they turned onto the pit straight. Well needless to say I was unsuccessful in that endeavour. Also the only thing between me and the pit in was a concrete barrier perhaps 4 feet high with a chain link fence on top of it. So I finish the roll of film in my camera and sit down at a conveniently located bus stop seat to put a new roll in when I hear a "swosh" sound. I walk to the concrete barrier and see Villeneuve sideways on pit in. He gives it full right lock and edges forward in an attempt to straighten the car and continue on to his pit. Well it's obvious that he isn't going to make it so I shake my head, he flips up his visor and clunks it into reverse, gives it a little left lock and backs up. He then puts it into first and edges forward and I nod my head indicating that he will makes it ok, which he does and continues down to his pit. Of course all the time this was going on I have an open camera in my hand.

PAYR, do folks in Reigate resent being called "London"? Did Reigate develop on its own, or was it only when Londoners wanted a bedroom commuter town that it came to be the Reigate we know as home of the Chiltons?

It’s outside the M25 so definitely not London. It’s an old town, even mentioned in the Domesday Book.

Has there ever been a wet Long Beach race?

I’ve heard it never rains in Southern California.

Looking forward to this, hopefully it can make up for what might be a borefest F1 race.

I still don't know who I want to win but as long as the racing is good again, I'm happy!

PAYR, jp, thanks for the Reigate info. I didn't think it sprang up from nothing like Milton Keynes.

I recall wet sessions and wet support races, but race itself, no.

You are a saint! A buddy sent me a link to a scan of the Autoweek coverage of that race.

I'm not. The saint is the guy who filmed it for posterity. Then, my understanding is that another saint put it online and built a place where people can share their love of F5000...

Looking forward to an evening of Long Beach action after what was an absolutely thrilling Formula E duel in Rome.

Long Beach is just special really. This is a good weekend :)

Actually I think this is the overarching weekend in LB show--they're sending Bell off to to do Indy qualifying.

Hi guys. So I had to watch last week's race after the fact thanks to work and missed doing my picks, only for my 2 regular picks to finally have their day, this has reaffirmed that I jinx my faves by picking them lol. But yay for Sato and Seabass, I was very happy indeed. :-)

So, it's my birthday today, and have already been given F1 quali fun and a great Formula E race and warm up sessions, (and should've been watching motogp), so am hoping for a Sato or Seabass pole for my last present of the day pretty please.

They chose to not set a lap on blacks, so Indycar should give them a chance to set a lap on reds if it get's redflagged?

I'm not sure I agree with Hinch there.

Can't help but always notice since my visit to Long Beach just how banked the turn on Shoreline Drive is and how uphill/downhill the hairpin is.
