How will Formula 1 look like when we will celebrate the 2000th Grand Prix? It must be around 47 years (so around 2066). I think we will then have no different chassis manufacture. We will have more show than sport. We will have a lot more safety standards. More street races, but also more spectacular race tracks.

What do you think?

I doubt there will be F1 by that time. It will perhaps get merged with FE.

Electric cars running on smart tracks, the track will have layers of coils to charge the car via electrical inductance to provide high voltage and high speeds, hopefully by then humanity will master nuclear fusion to provide green and cheap power. rules for maximum power usage, some new kind of tires made from some green material we didn't invent yet, and solid state high power fast charge slow discharge capacitor batteries to store the juice.

Does F1 exist today? I doubt it, a real pity...

F1 might but "Grand Prix" certainly doesn't.

Will anyone even own cars in 47 years, and if they do will computers drive them and the people be merely passengers?  If that is the case whatever exists in the way of a world driver's championship will have a tough time being road relevant if nobody else actually "drives." Of course I remember watching programs on TV in the 1960's like Tomorrow World and being told that by the year 2000 all cars would be able to fly so predicting the state of the world in 2066 is a pretty risky thing to do.

Old technology tends to live on in sports. People still breed and race horses today, so I’m sure people will continue to build and race cars in the future.

Hulkenberg still won't have a podium to his name.

But you can’t build computer controlled horses.
F1 has always been the pinnacle of car technology. In fact, its already started cutting back on technology for example when drivers had to start schifting gears automatically (2003/2004?). You can only ignore technological advances for so long. Once cars start dissapearing F1 will lose its significance. People won’t identify with the sport anymore.

For context, today's F1 is 47 years evolved from 1972.

But perhaps that could also be a boost for Racing as you have to go on race tracks if you want to drive a car by your own.

I don't think there is any sports that isn't ongoing today we had some years ago.

Racing will continue so does Formula 1.

I doubt that. CanAm was much more of technology than Formula 1 back then

And I doubt that Formula 1 has to be the pinnacle of technology as too much technology will destroy the importance of drivers and without drivers you don't have a sport, no emotions and so on. Formula 1 has to be the fastest racing series, but not the pinnacle of technology.

40, 50 years back reaching the pinnacle of technology was good for the sport as F1 got faster and so on. Now, reaching the pinnacle of technology is very bad for Formula 1.

Could be. But I don't think electric engines have to be bad as long as they are super fast and spectacular.

Generally Formula 1 will face 3 problems:

1. The change of the people. They are getting greener and less interested in cars.

2. The future technology could destroy the sport as all could be simuated perfectly and there won't be surprises, incidents and so on. That's what we already saw the last years.

3. The costs are more and more explosive. Already today you don't have any new teams or manufactures who wanted to join F1 because it's very expensive.

Point 3 is the only think Formula 1 really could handle itself.

It might be electric based but I am relatively sure energy storage will NOT be by batteries. Batteries are much more likely to be extinct by F1s 2000th grand prix than ICE power.

I think it will almost certainly primarily driven by electric motor. Hydrogen EVs could play a part if it becomes a regular feature of our transport industries. Future of purely battery EVs depends greatly on battery technology over the next few decades in both energy density and ultrafast charging. Not out of the question but not to be relied upon either. I also kind of think onboard biofuel engine or turbines providing a power source to an electric drive system isn't out of the question.

But it would be a massive ask to keep the ICE in racing as we know it for F1's 2000th Grand Prix (assuming that happens -  I wouldn't be so sure it will). Electrification will take over.

As FIA and other F1 stakeholders will continue to try to tie F1 with road relevance, F1 will be a competition between algorithms developed by auto and software corporations, to see which one can drive a car most safely and efficiently from point A to point B. Competition will be virtual as there will be no need to spend money on actual physical infrastructure and spectators will have abandoned the sport long ago. They will be held in a closed network of these corporations. The developer of the winning algorithm will be given the prize of employee of the month (if it's not AI), consisting of a day in a virtual simulator of any retro race category such as F1, rally, WEC, Dakar, etc. and a choice of poster of the most beautiful retro cars or one of those guys that was necessary to drive those anachronic, inefficient, dangerous and polluting things.

Rather depends on how events shape the world. It'll either be high tech wipeout style racing or back to basics more akin to the low costs we saw in the 60's & 70's and a much more europe centric series. If climate change really is that bad I suspect the latter.

That already startet in the 90s when they cut back ABS, traction control, active suspension and so on what was already used in 1993 by a lot of teams.

I'd like to see a Formula based on the concept of Formula Ford: one specified engine, very tight rules which keep costs and performance in check, but allow multiple manufacturers to participate. Overall performance to be somewhere between F3 and F2 levels so we could use the many proper circuits around the world. Forget the multi billion high profile "product"; returning to a niche sport with the best drivers in the world would be fine.

Dig me up and tell me whether it happens.

  • Drivers will post on social media during the race. Engine performance will be determined by the number of likes and shares they receive.
  • Cars now powered by pine needles and otter droppings.
  • Mighty woodlands reclaim much of Europe as F1 teams contend with rules forcing them to offset their massive carbon footprints. Sebastian Vettel opens a school for forest wardens.
  • While engine noise has been eliminated, spectators can purchase an app that will blast their auditory implants with noise from the petrol engine days.
  • Grosjean Anti-Collision System (GACS) has eliminated 99% of accidents.
  • The hip-hop of Lewis Hamilton has replaced Fleetwood Macs 'The Chain' as the theme song for F1 TV coverage
  • First Grand Prix in the Himalayan peaks,on the sea bed, and in M&Ms World.
