[ I was going to give up F1 starting this season, but as Sky have been showing the live races on Sky One, I've continued for a bit longer than anticipated. So I've decided to start the power unit usage thread again. I probably will not continue this once I lose my live coverage, so get it while you can ]

China:

Well, here we are at that time of the season when expectations turn to the PU element changes for Honda powered teams. But wait! This year, Renault have decided to take the lead. Here's where we stand so far:

Yes, that's correct - changes for Renault, Honda and Ferrari, but nothing for Mercedes.

The Mercedes teams look ominously reliable, as well as being the most powerful.  Whatever Ferrari fans and some of the media might have us believe.

Slightly early. If they are flying to victory in Canada with the same PU, though ...

I will be trying very hard to give up F1 and get my life back this weekend. If anyone has the ability to recognise an appalling piece Excel/VBA and would like to keep this thread rolling, PM me.

Honda's received an alleged 20 hp update and improved reliabilty. They claim that is.

Afaik the update was ICE related. If it is true, then why did they change almost everything for RB boys, why not just the ICE?

I think because they can swap those out more easily, making it one combo when swapping between FP1/FP2 <> FP3 and beyond. Also prevent mounting issues this way.

Yes, that was always going to be the way they played it, but it also looks like the Red Bull boys may be the big cats' dessert course.

I have no doubt Toro Rosso will continue to be used as a test mule wherever possible, but isn’t the difference in power unit usage so far caused by crashes of the Toro Rosso driver pair?

Kvyat had a spec 1 PU change in China because of reliability concerns I think, of which they now replaced the ICE for a spec 2.

I thought it wasn't allowed to add multiple units to the pool in one weekend?

I think that is correct, of course they can use more, but only last one is in the pool.  No free changes anymore.

You can, but you can only add one PU element subject to penalties. Renault only introduced elements subject to a first penalty, so they are fine.

I thought they said on Ch4 coverage that both RBRs had engine changes in Spain after FP.  Gasly's was still going on as Q started.  Or was I imagining it?

I think (and I think) Red Bull used their first PU on Friday then changed to the 2nd one (which they brought in at Azerbaijan) on Saturday.

But, I could be wrong and you could be imagining it BRG.   ;)

The initial report for the weekend - https://www.fia.com/.../80548/download - shows the two Red Bulls both on 2 ICE/TC/MGU-H/MGU-K and 1 ES/CE.

Then there are the following reports:

https://www.fia.com/.../80570/download - Renault, Ferrari and McLaren changes only

https://www.fia.com/.../80630/download - Renault and McLaren changes

https://www.fia.com/.../80735/download - Renault changes

Finally, the document detailing changes during Parc Fermé - https://www.fia.com/.../80742/download - includes Renault PU changes

So, I can't find any information about anything being changed at Red Bull. I'm not saying nothing happened - just that the FIA have not published anything.

No this is correct. MV had a connector problem resulting in an oil leak so they swapped PUs to spec 2 between the sessions.

They just swapped the existing conponents in their pool, not added new ones to it.

Yep, Max was running the spec1 PU in FP1 and changed to the spec2 that was already in the pool for FP2.

Ah, OK.  i was misled by talk of engine changes for an upgraded spec, but perhaps Ch4 were getting confused as well.  it can be catching.

Okay ... The wife has been insisting that I watch the C4 highlights, so I've not been able to completely cut myself off (although I'm not really paying too much attention to what's going on). So today I decided to update the my PU spreadsheet and, as the penalties are starting to come along now, I thought I'd share the updates:

I see that those vaunted more powerful and more reliable Hondas are living up to expectations.  The back row beckons....

But other than the Merc team mates, it is only Perez & Kubica on track to complete the season penalty free.

I think a drain cover had something to do with the Williams situation. But also, apart from the batteries, the Ferrari PU is holding up quite well too.

Remember how Kimis stats looked at this point last year and he drove whole season without penalties. So there may still be more than four drivers that don't use extra parts this year.

It depends on why they have had new components - they could still all be serviceable - although it doesn’t make sense to introduce so many components this early with development steps...

Hulkenberg, Magnussen, Giovinazzi, Kvyat and Russell are already out. I'd say anyone who has used 3 ICE or TC by now is also very unlikely to not use any more.

No. They said in France that Hulk will get it later on, but they didn't say it will happen in Austria. It was also an option, but it seems this will happen in different race weekend.

I just thought I'd mention that the only cars that have made it to Abu Dhabi without exceeding the limit of any PU elements are:

Lewis Hamilton

Valtteri Bottas

Romain Grosjean

(although it's not over yet and there's still time for something to go wrong). Here's the current table:

Bottas has at least a new ICE since his engine failure in Brazil.
