I played the game for about an hour at a friends place in the weekend just gone. It was a good game, stunning graphics, lots of cars and circuits, but the biggest problem, was for people like me who love real racing and when I say that, I mean proper wheel to wheel racing without crashing into them because of the handling in the game, games such as TOCA2, F197, Gran Turismo 1 (to a certain extent), Porsche Challenge and F1, allow me to do that, race so close to the other cars that its so difficult to get past them on various tracks. But GT2, I can just barge my way through without worrying about whether my car will be damaged or not. There is too much enphasis on the number of cars to driver rather than the actual sense of racing. you can just get into a Jaguar XJ220 or a Ford GT40, and simply blow everyone else away. There is no memory card battle, no GT time trial, no link option, no damage effects, no weather effects, no racing options like re-fueling during a race, timed pitstops, flags, or anything like that.
When you watch GT racing on TV when it its actually on, there is so much happening, the cars are all so equally competitive, but its different in GT2.

I think there should have been less than 200 cars and more of an enphasis on the racing side of it. Its too much about owning heaps of cars rather than testing them against equal opposition. GT1 is the same, you can win the TVR Cebera LM and use it many other events and blow everyone else away because its such a weapon. Also, the money should be much harder to get in GT2, you can win 15000 credits from ONE Race and a bonus car which you can sell for 100000 credits, then you can quite easily go and buy yourself a newer faster better car.

Ill put TOCA2 above GT2 any day of the week.

Yup, I totally agree Andrew. I think the folks who made GT2 failed to realise what it was about GT1 that everyone liked so much and chose the wrong things to improve upon for GT2. Not only did they choose the wrong things to improve upon, but by doing so they actually hurt the things that people liked about GT1.

I agree that GT2 has its faults. I'm not sold on the idea of having individually accessable races instead of a championship for most of the classes, and the catch-up included in the sim mode is disappointing.

As for the racing, make it difficult for yourself! Most of the races you can enter a car that will blow away the opposition but where's the fun in that? Instead have a look at the video, check out what sort of cars are being run, then enter something with 70bhp less or with sport tyres instead of slicks. Your winning percentage may suffer, but I can honestly say that I have not got more enjoyment out of any other PSX game.

PS: there is a memory card battle, its on the arcade disk. Hate for anyone to miss out on one of the best parts of the game.

I've had it for two nights and think it's overall superior. I miss qualifying, but it was generally meaningless.

The number of cars is astounding, and the main complaint I always heard was that there weren't enough European and US models - well, that's now taken care of.

The tracks are better (faster), and it's great having a real circuit and an oval thrown in.

Too bad the races are individual - it lends itself to arcade type of players, but the Arcarde disk is anything but the usual splash by comparison of the Simulation disk (read Psygnosis F1, whose Arcade mode is just stupid and meaningless).

I love the Manufacturers' challenges - it always bothered me that I couldn't choose to race similar cars to mine.

As far as blowing people away - there are cars which will do that. Don't trick out your best car, or scale back the HP with some fine tuning - I had to do that with the first version.

Overall, I think this game is so deep with the two disks included, it's amazing. I'm actually looking forward to playing the Playstation again and putting off my GPL practice for the first time in over a year. Thumbs up from me.

Yes, its not that im anti GT2 or anything like that!! Its just I love close, even, wheel to wheel racing, where your struggling to get past the cars in front because of the circuit your on, then you think you have a chance to out break him at a chicane at Donington Park, you lock the rear wheels, spin off side ways into the gravel, then you have to claw your way back through the field.

Ive driven the Lister Storm in GT2, its so damn easy!! in TOCA2, I was doing some test driving in the Lister Storm at a bonus circuit the one with hte lake in the middle, the weather was on variable, so it was constantly changing, I was wrestling this V12 brute around a circuit in the wet on slick tyres, its so much more challenging.

Nevertheless, I hear that Gran Turismo 2000 for the PS2, is going to be more of the same with even more cars and circuits..

I both agree and disagree.

Firstly, there is simply no freaking way any other racing game on the PS is anywhere even close to GT1 or 2. The F1 titles are truely horrid creatuions and TOCA is a joke for all concerned. I found McRae rally quite good though.

Someone mentioned GT 2 had stunning graphics. Your kidding... the pixels look larger this time and the cars are a little blurred.

I find the realism is excellent because the cars ar hard to drive if they are set up wrong but soften the rear end and play with the LSD settings and you find the right combo.

The BIG problem is that there is no difficulty setting. Anyone remember IdycarII for the PC?????? It had this setting where you could adjust in 1% incrememnts the difficulty setting between 80% and 120%. This was a great idea because it made the game almost dateless.

GT2 is too easy but i disagree htat the probelm lyes in the cash being too large.. i want to get to the fastest cars possible as quick as i can so i like that... but i wish the top cars were harder to beat. Yes i also reduce the power but it's a bit mikey mouse when you have to do this.

I find the variety of cars is what keeps me interested but yes... the racing is not real good given the poor competition.

The menu system is a bit of a drag and it does not keep the records for each track which annoys me.

If you want quick cash then enter the red rock "all stars" race and you win $50,000 olus a TVR "Speed 12" worth half a million. It taked 11 minutes to win 1.1 million credits.
