You have no idea if Ferrari have dropped any ball or if Merc have been perfect, the only thing we know is that we have a dominant Merc with Bottas leading the WDC and Merc the WCC.

Ferrari perhaps are pushing to close the gap while Merc is just cruising, a possible scenario so far

Yes I have, they had an engine failure in Bahrain while leading and their driver crashed into the wall in Baku when he had the speed for pole?

That's not dropping the ball, that's pushing to try to close it to a faster car, part of racing

So that's what leclerc was doing when he was cruising up front in Bahrain...

There was not often this much consistency in which teams were at the top, though. Even compared to the 00s the 10s are at half the number of WCC winning teams.

The period 1984-1998 is perhaps worse, with McLaren and Williams winning everything - with one title by Benetton as an exception in between.

I was more referring to the fact that only a few drivers each season have had a chance at winning races for the majority of F1 seasons contested for the last 40 years. Ferrari, Williams and McLaren were interchangeable at the top for 3 decades and you were unlikely to win if you were not in one of those cars. The names have changed (Ferrari, RedBull and Mercedes) but the result is still the same. The only difference is we have had the best driver of his generation in the best car of this generation with reliability champions of the past could only dream of so he's going to be hard to dismount from the top. Imagine if Prost or Piquet in the early 80's had had this sort of reliability.
