Good news. Lovely circuit and we need a GP in GB.

*edit: if it turns out to be correct of course :)

Oh right - potential contract extension.

Reading the thread title I was thinking this a bit early for a race weekend thread...

A lot of people seem to dislike SIlverstone but I always thought it delivered great racing and has some really exciting corners. Definitely remember great wheel to wheel battles in recent years.

And yet, Autosport/Motorsport seem to know nothing about it. Yet another medium which currently, doesn't appear to have a clue.

If it's according to JS, probably means it won't happen then!

He seems to be trying to say that Silverstone are lying about the new deal, he can't believe that his sources are wrong.

I suspect Silverstone are still trying to play up the "Last British Grand Prix" angle to sell tickets and won't want to give that up until the 11th hour.

What Joe didn't tell you is that it's going to stay in Silverstone but as a street race through the village...

Signing of the contracts in front of the grid on the Sunday maybe?

Doesn't it pretty much sell out every year? But I wouldn't put it past them looking for a chance to up the already farcical prices

I used to like it in the 'bridge' days but these days with this new configuration, well.. it's nothing special imo.

It's never been a very inspiring track, but nowadays, after Spa and Suzuka, it is probably the best GP circuit.  There is even non-DRS overtaking and you can't say that about many tracks.

Anyway, it looks like Liberty are caving over the hosting fee.

I rather suspect they want to announce it on their own instead of having to confirm a media report.

Neither side has to be lying. There could easily be an in principle agreement reached but no contract signed. Even if the basic terms for a deal have been agreed Silverstone wouldn't officially confirm until the ink is dry.

Let's hope it all goes ahead.

Formula E have confronted this problem and were only able to solve it by deciding to race mostly INSIDE the ExCel building.   I can't wait.  It will make FE's usual  Mickey Mouse tracks look like the Nordschliefe

Whilst on paper this track should suit the Ferrari's, I can't help but feel that this race will see another Merc 1-2 given their slick operational performance thus far in the season.

Guess we will have a better idea after qualifying.

I preferred Silverstone before the 1991 changes but I accept that such a fast circuit is not suited to modern cars. It's funny, journalists say things like "The circuit has outgrown the cars" when really the circuit didn't change much and the cars outgrew it.

The 1991 configuration with the current Becketts series of corners, Bridge corner was still pretty good. What they did a few years ago hasn't really brought anything to the track and has taken away the start at Woodcote which was always quite unique and fun. Somehow Silverstone still results in exciting racing however, which is what it's supposed to be all about.

Not sure why the oft touted "London Grand Prix" is being talked about again.

Firstly we don't need yet another event in London there's a whole country out there. Secondly the track would be a mickey mouse run around some docks that only the locals have heard of. If it's not going to be in the centre with recognisable sites nearby like Baku or Monaco then the London Grand Prix may as well be held in a car park at Heathrow terminal 5.

Thirdly London seems to be one of the least passionate places about cars I've been to in the UK. Other than the garish supercars parading around Kensington the humble car seems to way down the pecking order of transportation.

I've said for a while....the only way I can see a London Grand Prix working is if they use the roads in/around Hyde Park. Lots of work needed but doable without causing dreadful inconvenience.

But should we, just because we technically can?

I may be wrong, but I think it's an American thing.

Some years ago, I was working for a company that was bought out by an American organisation, We had offices near Kilburn station (got look it up and understand what I'm trying to say here). The first thing that was on the minds of the new owners was "like our other offices around the world, we want to have our UK presence in a prestigeous building right in the centre of town". Well, time went by and I think they saw the prices and decided "lets just refurbish the Kilburn offices, instead". We stayed in Kilburn for another 10 years until they closed the operation and moved it to China.

My point is that, often, people who are not familiar with London try to equate it to other cities that they know of. It's not, though. I'm not saying there are not other cities in the world that have the same issues associated with them. I'm just saying it's different to most.

Edit: I should have said that the company had their US headquarters in Chicago and also had others in places like Paris and Sydney.
