conor-daly-andretti-autosport-.jpg

Conor "Air Force One-Off" Daly will open as the first qualifier shortly after 11am Saturday!

It is time for what has been called the most nerve-wrecking moment in racing - qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 - this year in its 103rd iteration!

The past 3 days of practice at the Speedway built unspeakable drama already, including spectacular crashes by no less than FOUR very talented blokes, including one Fernandomania Alonsomania, as well as brand new Red Bull Junior and Indy 500 Rookie "Toro Rojo" Pato O'Ward, Frindy Frivehundred Frookie Frelix Frozenqvist, and Imperial Back-Striker Kylo Kaiser, in the OH NOOO!!-story of the event so far (Honey, I turned my Juncos into a bunch of Junkos)!

But it all kicks into overdrive the weekend before the race when 36 cars will vie to first make it into the top-30... and the slowest 6 will have to shoot it out to see who gets BUMPED and will miss the big show... while the fastest 9 get their own shoot-out to determine POLE position, and the final line-up of the first three starting rows!

Think there's no way Alonso will fail to qualify?  Think again!  It's gonna be a GP2-magnitude nailbiter for McLaren!

Scheduling:

SATURDAY, MAY 18

8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m.: Practice, Group 1

8:30 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.: Practice, Group 2

9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.: Practice, Entire field

11:00 a.m. – 5:50 p.m.: Qualifying (Top 9 drivers advance to Sunday’s Fast 9, 10th through 30th place locked in, done with qualifying, slowest six unqualified, move to Sunday for Last Row Shootout)

SUNDAY, MAY 19

10:15 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.: Practice, Last Row Shootout victims

10:45 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.: Practice, Fast 9 Gods (and Goddess?  Hmmm... you never know!?  Only ONE woman in the field, and her name is MANN, of all names!)

12:15 p.m. – 1:15 p.m.: Qualifying, Last Row (FINAL BUMPINGGGGGG!)

1:15 p.m. – 2:15 p.m.: Qualifying, Fast 9 (POLE "DAY" or whatever you wanna call it nowadays)

3:15 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.: Practice (for those 33 who made it into the show)

MONDAY, MAY 20

12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.: More Practice!

Check this link to see when and where to watch: https://www.nbcsport...motors/indy-500

Qualy order line-up (drawn out of a hat, can you believe it?? ): http://www.imscdn.co...0 qual draw.pdf

Can't wait!!

For what it's worth, I feel the hat draw needs to be replaced by an actual DRAFT, where the top-ranked team in the current championship standing gets to pick their qualy sequence position first, followed by the next ones in the standings sequence from top to bottom, and then the one-offers (not represented in the season standings) based on practice speeds.

This way, the regulars of the series get a small but still significant advantage when it comes to making it into the show, without going full 25-8 nonsense.  It also makes for a bit of good drama worth watching on TV after the last practice session on Friday.  Good idea?

We also need to drop the T-cars from the qualy lineup.  Literally NO team is actually entering a T-car these days...  :stoned:

In the past my wife has always enjoyed the drama of the "man on the bubble" and this year despite a female attempting to qualify it could be "mann on the bubble". :)

Oops there's a new thread, so I'll repeat my question here: Can a car withdraw their qualifying time like they used to in order to try again? Or does everybody just get one try per car?

IIRC everyone gets an attempt, then time permitting (and there should be plenty of time today) the usual bump day action with lanes and time withdraws will happen.

I did some rough math, assuming 4 minutes per car (a bit on the catious side) in 2 hours and 25 minutes everyone should have made an attempt. Crashes excluded of course.

Tomorrow, it's just one try

Today, I'm not sure, but I think they can cancel and retry, time permitting.

For tomorrow's shoot outs every driver gets one attempt only. But what exactly is an attempt? Could a driver go out, get up to speed and do two fast laps but then abort his run and return to the pits for a later try over the full four laps?

I've decided I hate NBC, for the simple fact that this year I've been unable to watch practice being streamed on YouTube like years previously. A great way of building interest for the race when you have to be in the States and have access to NBC to see that.

Anyway, go Nando!

TV  and live video coverage hasn't been this inaccessible since the late 1990s, at least. Daily practice was freely available online in 2001, with Windows Media (an a dial-up modem...).

Lets just hope come Sunday where the winner drinks some milk and has the awards of  Admiral of the Ocean Sea, the Viceroy, the Governor-General and honorific Don bestowed on them by Queen Isabella.

This coverage issue is annoying. Why can't NBC do a one time 500 pass?

Seems like an odd decision, unless they are confident in their setups and conditions at qualifying.

Have they always been running negative rear wing angles in qualifying, or is it new for the 2018 car?

Fairly sure that's been a thing for a while. I've definitely heard about it before. Someone more technically-minded than me might be able to tell you how long.

It's still occasionally hilarious, so there's that. It's as good a way as any to get your annual dose of camp.

Anyway, more on point, this fragmentation of broadcasts is such a turn-off. All these big corporations think they can fence off a tiny area with exclusive content, but more often than not it just makes the whole thing more of a hassle than it's worth.

At least they still put the highlights up on YouTube...

Of the 5 that lapped today O'Ward, Hanley and Kaiser are definitely the slowest by some margin. That's 3 cars that I think will be in the last row shootout.

Eurovision has this power to personally offend people who aren't its target audience. My dad is the same. When it comes to institutionalized camp, I stick with pro wrestling.

Anyway, qualifying. Is the Fred-o-meter back above zero again?

Of course. ESC is gonna be on the TV here, and Indy on the PC, thankfully Viasat streams the qual on their Viaplay, so no more Nigerian for me - just some Swedish! :)
It's tradiiton as well the ESC. 4 times a year (National final, ESC. Jr ESC and the Jr national final), that's the 4 times we have taco for dinner.

Your dad is AWESOME !
Fred’s on the up... he looked chipper in the garage a half hour ago and Gil was actually smiling. We shall see.

I’m already searching for shade... but I’ll soldier on in pit lane in a bit for Y’all...

Yes Sky F1 is covering qualifying tonight and tomorrow. Bit nervous for Alonso, I think the bottom 3 will be Hanley, Mann and Kaiser.

Sport- tastic evening ahead of me- Rome Masters tennis, Indy qualifying and Nascar All Star thing to finish off. Plus the always entertaining Eurovision voting.

Actually you need access to NBC Gold which is an additional cost.  NBC network is over the air in most markets and NBCSN is also pay to play via cable.  IOW we pay twice for the complete coverage once for NBCSN and once for NBC offers no international service and never has.  The reason it's not in other markets is likely because there aren't any buyers.  A casualty of the free market.  Were there the interest in your market I'd bet Indycar would do a deal if it didn't interfere with the international terrestrial TV deal.  As far as ICS serving a stream internationally that's probably not worth it to them either.  Our friends from over there that are big ICS fans here are outliers.  It's likely your market isn't big enough for anything but quals or the race.

Have they always been running negative rear wing angles in qualifying, or is it new for the 2018 car?

Fairly sure that's been a thing for a while. I've definitely heard about it before. Someone more technically-minded than me might be able to tell you how long.

I had a chat with Jeremy Milless some years ago when he engineered Newgarden at Sarah Fisher's team, for some reason they brought their oval car too to the Toronto Indy (this was back with the original Dallara kit) and they took it out of the trailer as they were packing up at the end of the weekend. I pointed out the tiny rear wing set to a negative angle so that it produces lift rather than downforce and wondered how can they drive like that - and Jeremy said: "Very carefuly!"

Yes, i do understand why this is done, to dial out understeer from the car without adding extra drag at the front, but still when you're up close to a car set up like that it just looks mental especially if you're used to the looks of the F1 cars where every bit is designed so that it produces maximum possible downforce.
