There are beards and there are beards. Hamilton has the former while Bottas has the latter.

I think all beards have had their time. I was so pissed off when beards became a thing. I've got the weakest beard in the world. I get hairy cheeks and nipples, but nothing joins up! No chest hair, just hairy nipples and bum fluff whiskers.

If you mean the fact that he said that he is 33, show was recorded in december where he was still 33.

Saw it. Loved it. Thought Lewis came across very well spoken, not arrogant or 'trying hard' at all.

Letterman knows his motorsport and you can tell he's got a huge amount of respect for Lewis given his background and the sacrifices made.

Same here, I liked the old footage and the kids were a laugh too.

Seems a bit unfair. Hamilton is kind of an awkward guy, and this setting would make anyone try to get a few good laughs in - and he pulled it off more than once, so fair enough.

I think he did really well to sell the experience of driving the cars, the sport in general, and the specific appeal it has to him - as well as some of the struggles he, and any athlete, has under such huge pressure.

For an audience that's probably at least half Letterman fans with no special interest in F1, that should probably count as a job well done.

Heck, if I see this again I might actually crack a smile when the dude wins the next race. ;)

Whenever I watch Lewis Hamilton he never come across as someone at ease with himself, he is a very complicated character. Maybe this is why people can't really take to him in the way they take to other sportspeople.

I don't see how that goes together with him having the largest following by a margin and generally a much greater marketing appeal than other F1 drivers, as often stated (and probably true).

I dont understand how people can call Lewis fake. I think he is exactly the oposite... that 'what you see is what you get' type of guy. When he's upset you can see he's upset, when he's happy you can see he's happy. He might not be the best well spoken guy out there, he might not feel very comfortable in front of a camera or might pass as insecure, but for sure he is not fake.

As for the interview, I really enjoyed it..  really funny that old man and had some nice old footage with Lewis.

People say he's fake cause he hangs out in Hollywood, gets invited to things like the Met Gala and calls everyone he hangs out with 'bro'.

Goes with the territory of that world. Some people just can't stand it and so the easiest insult to throw at him is 'fake'.

He's without question the biggest international superstar/celebrity this sport has ever had. Appreciate him for what he is.

Loved the interview! Lewis came across really well and I wish they spent more time talking to him and less time on the kids and other fluff.
By far the most informative bit was his discussion on how difficult it is to maintain such incredibly high performances through out the year, year after year. F1 is ultimately a single player sport but the drivers carry the work of thousands of people and hundreds of millions of dollars on their back, not to mention the millions of fans watching. They deserve more credit than they get.

Lewis is fake and a lot of people have trouble connecting with him but yet he has the biggest following and has done more for the sports popularity than most drivers combined.

He does PR speak but yet when he wears his heart on his sleeve and says it like it is they call him arrogant and him having a sense of entitlement

He went on a show did an interview, told his story and promoted his sports to the best of his ability and the delivery was very okay but some are disturbed by his beard

it's never ending ......

And of course we are Gods who must judge the personalities of others, rather than accept they're racing drivers doing what we'd love to do, only much better.

What is letterman doing with the giant beard... looks like a homeless

He's described it as a 'retirement project'! But if you were retired and had one of the most well-known faces in America, wouldn't you like to just not be spotted in the street and pestered for autographs and selfies? *

“I just got tired of shaving every day, but then it became something else, and I’m not quite sure what it became.”

In his dry Midwestern delivery, tinged with a new and unaccustomed element of wistfulness, he said: “The beard is a good reminder to me that that was a different life. I’m hopeful that I will either find something else, or something else will be presented to me.”

https://www.nytimes....retirement.html

* My late father was one of the best-known faces on British TV in the 1950s and 1960s. Even back then it was intensely annoying - people would just shove an autograph book at him in the middle of a meal, or in a pub garden, or in the street and demand an autograph, often without so much as a 'please' or 'thank-you'. In the age of the selfie and social media I should imagine it's almost intolerable.

I think you need to explain that a little bit more. The old conservative F1 ''diehard'' crowd that decides how a F1 driver shoud ''look'', doesn't like him.

The rest of the world that thinks it's 2019 and not 1960 really loves him, judging his massive following.

Nothing changes. In the 1930s the 'old guard' were often critical of Raymond Mays as they 'didn't like the cut of his jib': in the 1950s Moss, Hawthorn and Collins were viewed (mostly rightly!) as a bunch of National Service-dodging, woman-chasing wide boys; in the 1960s Jackie Stewart was considered 'too flash', and it's probably best not to enquire too closely into what the 'blazers' thought of James Hunt ...

I'm sure even SF Edge and Charles Jarrott had their detractors who were of the opinion that they should have stuck to bicycle racing, as that was a sport for gentlemen!

Arthur Askey?

All jokes aside, I watched the interview in the run up to the AJ debacle last night and thoroughly enjoyed the show (not so much the boxing result though). Hamilton came across as genuine, and as is well documented, someone who wears his heart on his sleeve.

There are always going to be some people who get upset with whatever he does. He's like marmite - you either love him, or hate him. It's as simple as that.

I have no idea how he deals with the constant media scrutiny and coverage, as I kind of got the impression that he's a very private person, but that flies directly in the face of his social media presence.

I'm of the opinion that he's only truly happy when he's behind the wheel of his F1 car, although I'm sure Bono would disagree with that if last weekend was anything to go by.

Well worth a watch if you have access to Nexflix.

Just watched it. Skipped a few parts.

It was okay. Standard stuff. Nothing you haven't heard before.

Nice to see Anthony (and Linda) in the crowd. The mini-feature about how Lewis effectively "sacked" his own father was quite sad.

... might pass as insecure, but for sure he is not fake.

That's what it seems like to me. Fake seems deliberate, like the Hollywood types who laugh hysterically at stories that aren't even meant to be funny. Still, hard to blame the guy. Broken home, tons of pressure from an early age (and yes, it gets passed as a laugh now, but for every success story there's tons of kids who don't deliver on their parents' attempts to get them to perform and suffer from it in various it ways), apparently bullied in school, and always a bit of outsider by virtue of class and perhaps even ethnicity.

One of the more striking things in the Alonso documentary about his last race at Ferrari has always been how he goes to Mercedes to congratulate Hamilton; he walks in, and the guy just commands the room. Folks seem to defer to him almost automatically. Hamilton doesn't have that. No big deal, everyone's different.

Apologies if I have offended any Lewis Hamilton fans, I didn't mean F1 in general, if we had a footballer who was clearly the best in the world year on year he would be hero worshipped and winning SPOTY consecutively as well as having some very lucrative contracts like Cristiano Ronaldo or David Beckham does, and getting lots of media attention, something which Hamilton clearly craves with his celebrity photo opportunities. F1 drivers usually do quite well in SPOTY, even Damon Hill won sports personality of the year twice.....

If Hamilton gets media coverage it's because he craves it; but if anybody else does it's purely natural because they are the best at what they do. Interesting logic. One thing that always strikes me, with this place at least, is that his detractors seem well informed of his media image, celebrity photo-shoots, interviews, etc. Seems they follow him more closely than those who are fans of his driving.

The two you mention have plenty of detractors too. Perhaps you are an admirer of both. Whatever the case thankfully footballers rarely win SPOTY (UK award), and the last time one did was a perfect example that it's no longer particularly relevant.

Possibly I'm wrong, but Hamilton doesnt appear to be that active on social media like other drivers are. And I've seen plenty of other drivers having a life outside of F1 by visiting celebrity or other sporting events too (Leclerc got around this weekend it seems :p). And some other F1 drivers are backed by real PR companies, while Hamilton got a rid of this years ago.

And yet, he is fake, craves for coverage and the others not. Makes sense. Totally ;)

No way is he the biggest star the sport has ever had. Both Senna and Schumacher were more popular. And Senna could actually string two words together.
