Sadly, Norman had been struggling lately so it comes as no surprise, but what a life - what a fabulous and long, enjoyable life he led. A lovely man, a true gentleman and it was a great pleasure to meet him a few times; he had time for pretty much everyone.
Condolences to Norman's family - they can be so proud of him - and friends.

Just like Richard, I met old man Norman briefly a few times, the last being in July last year and he was such an absolute pleasure, always with a smile and a twinkle in his eye, making jokes and happy to chat with everyone. What a long and wonderful life he has had, I feel so happy to have had the privilege of having those few short chats with him.

What a terrible week this has been. Rest in peace Norman... But what an innings he played. Apart from his long life within the motor industry he was also one of the very few wartime RAF Blenheim force gunners to have survived at all. For him his last 70-plus years could be viewed as a bonus...
Sincere condolences - of course - to his family and many friends, worldwide.

Very sad, but I was unaware of the nature of his wartime activities. Makes him even more remarkable for my money!

I was sorry to read that Mr Dewis had passed away. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the launch of the Mike Hawthorn 'Golden Boy' book a few years ago when among other things we discussed the 1955 Goodwood 9 Hours race in which he finished 5th with the Broadhead D Type he shared with Bob Berry. This makes me wonder how many others can claim to have seen Norman Dewis the racing driver?. I know that he did Le Mans in 1955 with Don Beauman and that William Lyons discouraged Lofty England from using him as a Works driver because of his value as a test and development man. Does anyone know of any other races?.

Yes. Mille Miglia 1952, running 3rd with 180 or so miles to go when the steering on the C-Type broke. Although given his co-driver was one S. C. Moss I do not know how much driving he managed.

Those three races do appear to be the only ones he actually competed in, although he was a nominated driver at several other events but didn’t actually get to race.

I didn't include the 1952 Mille Miglia for that reason Ensign. Incidentally, considering Sir Williams attitude toward Norman being used as a Works driver I wonder if he knew that two of his employees were sharing a car in the 1955 Nine Hour Race?.

Norman Dewis did produce a Formula 3 car (DNC-Rudge) that is listed in a few race entries 1950-1951.Here’s his listing on the Racing Sports Cars site:

Those three races do appear to be the only ones he actually competed in, although he was a nominated driver at several other events but didn’t actually get to race.
These include 1 Commander Yorke Trophy (Silverstone) 8-7-1950 - shown as entry No 16, in non-production car, 10 lap race. Not known if competed
SUNBAC (Silverstone) 2-9-1950., entry No 58, Heat 1, retired 1 lap piston
Sheffield & Hallamshire Motor Club (Gamston) 14-5-1951, entry No 25, not in first 3 finishers in each of the two races
