Swore off it ever again after the heat of last year, but this weekend is forecast in the low 20s and I'm regretting it already.
Next year it is then!

Romain Dumas has broken Heidfeld's 1999 record in the all electric I.D. R
Hmm...
I've a friend who worked for a time with a team on the British Hillclimb scene. I remember him telling me that he was absolutely sure that a British Hillclimb car would've beaten Heidfeld's old record a long time ago, but they were never invited. He had (perhaps a quite cynical) view that there was no desire from FoS officials to see the F1 record beaten by a car/driver combination that didn't have as broad appeal, or wasn't as marketable.
Me thinks they've found their new "sexy" record holder. An impressive time no doubt, but I'm not looking forward to all the inevitable crowing about how an electric car is now faster than an F1 car et cetera et cetera.

I never cease to be amazed at how EVs rub people up the wrong way.
I was struck that someone on Twitter was 'gutted' (!) the ID R had beated the record.
It's a racing car and it went up the hill very fast. Who cares what powers it?
Posted 05 July 2019 - 20:26
I'm rather surprised that Nick record had held so long, however awesome the run looks the 1999 McLaren is twitching like mad, so one would think any of newer cars should be able to outpace it. Maybe there was no real serious attempt to do it as it requires warming tyres and accept high risk of crash and all that but still.
Posted 05 July 2019 - 20:34
To be honest Goodwood FoS records are a bit meaningless as only a handful of entrants ever really go on full attack. It's a terrible measure of how good the cars entering it are. We've known for years that Heidfeld's record was beatable by a good number of cars, we were just waiting for someone to come along and do it.
I think the fact that it is electric just brings out the cynicism and the EV haters. If a new record was set by a V12 powered lightweight hillclimber those same people would be crowing about how wonderful it was. Because it's electric...only bitterness.

Aren't F1 not allowed in the competition these days ?

I'm sure there are plenty of people, both in British national hillclimbing and F1, who could have taken Heidfeld's mark to under 40 seconds, but I'm equally sure that John Dawson-Damer's fatal accident in 2000 - which also claimed the life of a marshal - weighed heavily on everyone's minds. It struck me today that the number of straw bales on the upper part of the run seemed to be more than in previous years. Of course, if you're expecting something fast and electric might hit them that's not a fire safety issue ...

Year-old F1 cars are allowed on the hill, but I think there's an unwritten agreement that they don't do timed runs. Not that that's necessarily stopped one or two drivers from giving it a go. I was there on the Friday in 2001 when a young chap called Takuma Sato tyre-smoked a BAR off the line - to a standing ovation. He certainly wasn't holding back ... I wonder what happened to him?

Does anybody know how many of Michael Schumacher's cars are running during the weekend? I heard both Damon and Mika were going to drive some, and also saw a 1997 Ferrari being delivered to the event from America on a photo on Twitter.

They're also not allowed to run race spec tyres as well for the same reason, testing restrictions, they have to put up with Pirelli's exhibition tyre which is nowhere near as grippy as the race tyres (and it was the same with Bridgestone before them).
Whilst the ID R was massively impressive, I can't help feeling that Heidfeld's run was more so. McLaren didn't rework the car specifically for the hillclimb, it was a 99 car that they sent there and told Heidfeld "Have at it".
Would love it if one of the F1 teams would now bring a 2017 car with special tyres from Pirelli and have a full go at it again.

Evidently quite a few people.
You like what you like. Noisy cars will likely always be more popular among diehard racing fans than the silent electrics.

i think some elect to use inter's or wet tyres as the car is too long sat waiting so the tyres are cold and normal slicks are not good cold.
919evo might be faster anyways

I have to make this slightly pedantic point
These racing EVs are not silent. Anyone who's been to an FE race or test session or seen that ID R will attest that they really do make a significant noise. It's just not as loud.
Posted 06 July 2019 - 10:27
With FE and current V6T Hybrid F1 you can hear the sound of aero and tyre grip so it's much better for me. Also I've grown up with all the electric motored toys like RC cars and mini cars so electric motors sound cool for me, plus those Toyota hybrid roadcars on streets sound cool when they accelerate from 0 speed at signals etc because recent cars launch on electric motor only.

The amount of downforce it has is staggering. If the 78 was painted to the road, this was tarmaced into its very grain.

When it comes to general hillclimbing, wouldn't a purpose built EV be just simply mighty competitive? Usually a short run so only a small, lightweight battery. Fantastic power to weight for the motors. Massive, instant torque and no gear changing needed.
Surely it's one category where EVs are just a superb choice...

Just got back. Had a lovely time and the sun certainly helped. With little ones in tow couldn’t see that much but we saw most of the F1 cars being prepared just prior to going out. Having last been five or so years ago I can’t help thinking that the F1 teams aren’t supporting the event like they used to, at least not in terms of drivers.
Ocon was the only ‘current’ driver I saw. Maybe a few more are going to be there tomorrow.
Still there were loads of things to do and the family are badgering me to go back next year!
Sainz was there, as was Giovanazzi. Norris is supposed to be there tomorrow as well. I suspect some of the top guys tend to stay away, as they'd likely get swamped by autograph/selfie hunters. I still remember what a stir Valentino Rossi caused when he was there a few years ago.
As an aside, does anyone else find it slightly irritating that F1 teams have started painting old cars in their current liveries? It annoys me on a pedantic level - like the 2012 Sauber, decked out in Alfa colours. Same for the Renault (Lotus). I'd much see the cars presented as they were raced at the time.
