Just trying to keep up with the Goodwood Festival of Speed today on their live feed. Unable to attend this year so will miss seeing Nick Fennell's Lotus 38/7 in the metal but the glimpses of it on screen have, to some extent, made up for that. Well done to everyone involved with this car's restoration and to Classic Team Lotus in particular for ensuring that it is presented in impeccable fashion. I know that it appeared on display at the recent London Concours at the Honourable Artillery Company and I look forward to being able to see it for real at some stage.
The otherwise very good FOS coverage was spoiled to some extent by the principal commentator twice referring to this car as being Jim Clark's Indy winner from 1967. Right year for the car but two years out from "the greatest victory" of 1965. A pity, as 38/1 made an unforgettable appearance at Goodwood in 2010 so they really should have known but I guess it's fairly easy to make an error given that the Lotus presence began in 1963 with the Type 29 and, following the unfortunate experience the following year with the Type 34, finally secured victory with the 38. Jim Clark drove three separarte Type 38s: in 1966 finishing second with 38/4 and then retiring with engine failure in 1967 with 38/7. A truly great and influential racing car and truly delightful to see it presented so magnificently by its current owner.
