Hi,

Just been reading about the new Porsche RSR, and all of its new improvements … what I don’t understand is how BoP works with them. If the car’s improvements deliver a clear performance advantage over the last model, what incentive is there to make these improvements if BoP curtails the performance so that the car fits in with the rough performances of other competing cars? In other words, why upgrade when BoP effectively has to be there to cancel them out to keep the close racing?

Hard to explain.

You are correct in saying that BoP is to try and ensure parity and close competition in GT racing.

Porsche have brought the upgrade not necessarily for performance but to try and make things easier for setup, to dial in the car, to make the car more comfortable for the drivers etc.

The upgrade might not be for direct performance but to make the car a better overall package (even if it is hurt by BoP).

Upgrades are still important in GT racing, look at BMW in WEC for example. Apart from some jokes about the car being huge, it has not worked out and part of the reason is because they have not been able to upgrade the car or the upgrades have not worked. It just shows that BoP is not everything.

That's my take anyway, could be wrong. :D

It makes me wonder why we don't have more small car makers like we did during the BPR days.  The production requirements are not crazy.  Maybe we don't have the same number of small sports car makers.

GT cars are all very different in their strengths and weaknesses.  BoP attempts to make it possible for any car to have a shot at winning, but it won't equalize every car to the level of the worst car.  It won't help a car with too much low-speed understeer compete on a circuit with lots of tight turns, or a draggy car to compete well at Monza, or a lot of things that just make the car harder to set up or drive well compared to the competition.

The following is aboutr GT3 cars not GTE, but was eye-opening for me about how much GT cars can differ within BoP.  These are blogs posts about the unique characteristics of each GT3 car in the new Assetto Corsa game, and the developer worked with the manufacturers, teams and drivers to get all this info

Porsche 911 GT3 R

Lamborghini Huracán GT3

Bentley Continental - Second Generation

Ferrari 488 GT3
