Formula 1

1f64c.png RACE DAY 1f64c.png Lewis Hamilton goes after a record-breaking 6th #BritishGP victory later on Sunday, but his team mate starts on pole. Who are you backing for the victory? #F1Starts

Wherever you are it still starts at ten past stupid o'clock, sorry. FIX THIS, LEWIS HAMILTON WITH ROSS BRAWN!  Ahem. In more postive news, the race weekend has been celebrating Williams so feel free to really Williams it up this morning ahead of the race and indeed post whatever British GP memories you have, either from being there in person or watching it on TV.

A very special hot lap to mark a very special occasion for a very special man... #F1 #BritishGP

Lewis Hamilton takes Sir Frank on a hot lap of Silverstone
To celebrate 50 years as a Team Principal, Sir Frank had a rather special hot lap around the Silverstone circuit...

A towering achievement, rightly celebrated.

Qualifying

Bottas took his first Silverstone pole and ant time of writing there no grid penalties which means we enjoy the huge privilege of being reasonably sure we know who will be starting where! I will post it when I find it but top three is Bottas, Hamilton, Leclerc.

Non Williams content but awesome - Fernando Alonso drives Ferrari's first F1 race-winning car and then misses the drivers' bus because he takes it for an extra lap, presumably because he reckoned he could beat his previous time.

It seems very humid now in the F2 race, but I guess rain is out of the question...?

Unless this is a retrospective the thread title has the wrong year!

Finally on my way to the track after being stuck waiting for a bus at Banbury as someone genuinely thought only 32 people would be coming on the train from Birmingham on race day.

Don't expect much from Ferrari in this race, unless it turns out that two stops are better, but even then they probably will have the weakest race pace of the three.

If Red Bull is already this close over one lap they should be quite close over the race distance too, but likewise Mercedes seems stronger on race day. Ideally Hamilton shouldnt lead after T1 because he is far more likely to build a gap than Bottas is normally.

This is the kind of attention to detail you can rely on with a SophieB OP. I’d ordinarily just live with it but I will change the title to avoid confusing future people trying to find it!

If it’s a rerun of 2018, will Vettel win again? :p

My theory is that the start time was changed solely so that the minute-hand of the clock does not obscure the name of the sponsor anymore at start-time.

Now you can't un-see it.

Interesting idea, I thought it was to accommodate American TV for adverts/lead in which would be less galling if they were watching anyway.

There's moisture in the air. Not quite enough for actual rain, I fear.

Watching Alonso hustling that car, basically a priceless piece of history, drifting it through corners, is a thing of beauty.

Indeed. Did they ever give any explanation as to the reasoning behind the change and planting it plum in the middle of the afternoon? It's a nice day outside... are folks (as in the casual viewer, as in the vast majority) really going to sacrifice their whole Sunday afternoon for F1? You'd imagine it would be detrimental to TV viewership, before you even get into what it is up against and the 'F1 is doomed' stuff.

Dont know where you live, but isnt 15:10 better than 14 that we used to have in Central Europa then?

I love that aspect of it too, and why not, it’s what it was made to do. I like to think the car enjoyed being put to work as it was designed one more time.

Loved that. Sir Frank has always been a huge fan of Lewis, always wanted him to drive for Williams some day. Sadly there is next to nil chance of that ever happening, but a great moment for Lewis to take him for a spin. The respect that Lewis has for Frank is very obvious too. Williams is an iconic team, I hope they really can make it towards the pointy end some day.

Yes: "Research has indicated that a wider TV audience is reachable later in the afternoons, especially in the summer months."

Hey, that's my avatar! :smoking:

Its because he so wanted to simply do a lap with some pace and some agression in corners, instead of just cruising around like he did in the first lap :)

last season bottas faded towards the end of the race,

so we'll see what happens today.

this could end up being the best race of the season so far.

I thought the 10 past thing was so tv channels can start on the hour and have time for a bit of buildup

I'm excited to see Verstappen's race pace today to see how much of an outlier Austria was

For me it definitely isn't, much preferred the 14:00 start time!

In the past I could still do something after the race as the finish was around 15:45 but now GPs last till around 5 o clock which basically ruins my whole Sunday afternoon.

Wet race - 1:Ham, 2: Ver, 3: Lec

Again, watching F2 I struggle to see where the degredation is coming from. They were setting fastest laps at the end of the race.

It's cold again, with very light and intermittent rain. Lap 1 might be a little tricky.

Not for Australia. The extra hour has pushed a lot of races past midnight on a Sunday night for the east coast which is where most of the population is.

Looking forward to it.

Last year's race was a good one, hopefully more of the same today.

Max will be the one to challenge the Mercs IMO unless Charles can get ahead of at least Hamilton after the first few turns.

Could be good for those starting on softs, assuming it stays damp.
