Could this be the next breakthrough battery technology. Please pick this apart and show me the downside.

XNRGI battery technology. Developed over 15 years by Motorola, Intel, US Navy. Commercialising - now.

Summary (compared to present technology Lithium):

- Energy Density 3x (mass basis) 5x (volume basis)
- Safe. No thermal runaway, no dendrites
- Longer life
- Capital cost (Factory) 1/20
- Re-charging rate x2.5
- Cost approx 1/2

That's certainly the scale of improvement that's needed but I'll believe it when I see it. Where's the 'commercialized' element in this announcement? A glance at their website talks about those performances as "expected advantages".

As it stands, batteries are not the solution.

Good that they can reperpose (sic) factories... Looks a bit like all those cancer cures that turn out to be maybe, perhaps, oh dear, we got it slightly wrong and we appear to have spent all that grant money, but it did work on mice sort of, well a lttle bit - Can we have some more?

Hmm - "Page not found" message for second link, even on their own website clicking on "Technology" gives page not found - Maybe they are being swamped by investors - Oh dear, am I getting cynical in my old age?

The thing is, battery tech WILL improve, and the next generation of tech will require massive investment. So do you not invest because some promising technology has a bad web page? Or because the "expected advantages" aren't known yet? How do we progress without funding things that we know are statistically more likely to fail than succeed, when that success could bring such a massive improvement to our well-being?

Looks like they've moved the page.

I suspect that is why Tesla and Panasonic aren't bosom buddies any longer, no point building gigafactories when the next tech will need different facilities.Just going by the headline claims, it'll be a great battery. It doesn't solve my problem in particular -not enough electricity, but that seems to be an issue that Australian politicians are keen to ignore.
