Midway through lap 34 of today's race, the F1 season enters its second half. There will be no pause, no breath drawn, no referee's whistle. As the laps turn, we race further and further away from the hopes of winter testing and the promise of Melbourne's sunshine.

For a few, fleeting seconds, the drivers will be suspended at equidistance, 50/50. A coin toss. Look towards today's grid - headed by Mercedes, Ferrari tailing behind. A roll of the dice for rain? If there's one thing to be sure of, at the Mercedes-Benz German Grand Prix, it's that the house always wins. Right?

Welcome to ROUND 10 of the 2019 FIA FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.

*Norris back of the grid, battery change - P19

**Vettel rumoured pit-lane start, maybe not, remains P20

Hamilton will fancy his chances from pole, Verstappen a handy wild-card alongside.

How's your luck, Ferrari? Both cars stranded in the garage - what are the odds?

Kimi played it cool for a strong P5. Grosjean probably remembers the Melbourne-spec sunshine with a surprise P6. McLaren's fortunes rest on Sainz. Perez a superb P8.

Renault slow, in sympathy with McLaren. Stroll escaped Q1, at least. Toro Rosso are usually stronger in race trim. A better showing from Kubica in the upgraded Williams.

Dry tyres, TomNokoe? But you do know... it's going to rain!

@fergieweather

Some rain overnight at Hockenheim. Today is challenging re forecast detail, but further rain likely at times prior to the race. A number of models lean to increasing probability of rain into race. Latest FIA forecast 60% pre-race; 80% during.

I'm reliably informed it has just bucketed down during Porsche Supercup. Confirmed, track is wet :D

But hey, hey, there's still a long way to go...

Bring it on! All the ingredients are there for it to be a classic! Finally a proper fight between the lion king and his young pretender from the front row, maybe even with some rain to spice up that particular sub debate. A rampant Leclerc from p10 and an eager Seb from p20 in arguably the best car of the weekend. Anything seems possible. Let the fun begin!

Please let it rain. I mean a proper downpour, not a light drizzle.

Potentially important aspect

Most drivers on the F1 grid have no experience with the current tyres because there have been no wet test sessions or race weekends.

However, a wet weather test for 2020 tyres at Paul Ricard in late May has potentially given Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, Pierre Gasly and Sebastian Vettel and head start over their rivals.

They are the only drivers who have driven their current cars on any form of wet tyre, although they would not be told exactly what they were using, or if the tyres they were using were identical to or based on the 2019 product.

Both the wet and intermediate have changed for this year relative to 2018, with new compounds.

https://www.motorspo...irelli/4502660/

Mercedes doesnt look extremely strong this weekend, and Hamilton tends to play it safe, so I would go for a Max win. I can see one of the Ferraris still getting on the podium, especially if Vettel gambles on a wet set-up and it rains properly.

Would love to see more of this action in 2 hours as well :D...ofc if this happened those stewards would likely just red flag the race or call SC to the track.....

The sight of a wet track on a Sunday quenches my tired and withered body.

Has it come too soon though? Any chance it'll dry before lights out?

The tarmac is not as hot as expected and it seems like there will be more before the race, so a damp start at least seems likely. The forecast is changing every minute though.

We've all been watching the forecasts far too much this week. This is perhaps the time to just sit back with a drink, switch the build up on and see what happens.

Hopefully the OP formatting doesn't go haywire....... see you in 2hours.

At least is raining. Ferrari 1-2 in quali would have been useless anyway.

Can’t wait to see how the TF 90 will( not ) perform ( if it doesn’t break down of course )

Don't fret, you'll miss nothing. Twenty laps behind a safety car then they'll throw a red flag and get the podium wrong.

Beautiful, clean and expensive country/city. Strange laws but very good high quality education. Visited your country a few years ago for another project. That visit coincided with your new year celebration. Very nice celebration with boats shooting out fireworks... for some reason, one of them appeared to catch fire... A very lovely but hot country. I stopped chewing gum after that visit. A country worth visiting. Lots of Australians agree.

A wet race? What is this sorcery? It's only been about 3000 years since the last one of those...

Ah, who am I kidding? It'll likely be the same old story. They spend the whole race talking about rain that never arrives till after the race. ;)

A chaotic wet race is always fun... I think we're gonna see a very good battle between Max and Lewis.

Just watch the Paddock Pass from yesterday. Hamilton didn't look/sound completely healthy/recovered too me. Very careful and low voice speaking. Visual doing all possible to protect his troth as much as possible (impressed how he recognized that importance and acted towards it). Anyone else catches that? Curious if a wet start/part race could influence his health more then others because his health past day?

Ps. Norris is whole season and this weekend again, a tick too hard for himself imo.

Pss. Ricciardo his comments where CLASS and professional without excuses.

I'm using a rain radar application that has never let me down. And that one projects that at least the start of the race will be rain-affected. It doesn't project beyond that right now.

Same, this one is here always correct, on the minute. On the bike back-return shop is half hour. This site has often gave me exactly the right time span i could go up and down dry between 2 rain-showers.

Mercedes seem like the perfect rain car to be honest so I'm not hugely anticipating an exciting race at the front but will be very interesting to see the racing through the field

Please, Michael Masi, you can be our favorite race director. The one who says: "I don't red flag any races as long as there are cars left on the track. The last surviving car wins. Buahaha!!...err...excuse me."

Eh we have no idea how the Merc car is going to preform in the wet and that goes for the Redbull and Ferrari cars, actually its pretty much unknown territory.
