There is a country that fits into that time gap that is hot and doesn’t have a race yet... Australia!

Every international series comes to Australia, except for FE. Strange it hasn’t happened yet.

(Which also raises the question of why no race in Japan. Seems an obvious place to have on the calendar)

I do not remember any street races in Japan.  Is there perhaps some restriction on them?  Or are Japanese cities simply too busy to close off streets for racing?

There were serious talks about a race in Yokohama or Tokyo a few years ago, it seemed like a pretty much sure thing. But then the idea just died at some point and we haven't heard anything more.

As FE testing starts next week, i think BMW & NIO will use the test to evaluate different drivers.

We should get the entry list this week

I was actually really surprised when BMW didn't confirm Sims along with Gunther, I thought he's done a very reasonable job with room for improvement. They must have some other promising options under consideration.

Btw, I'm not sure if this has been posted here before, but during early summer, the local press was full of articles about a potential Budapest ePrix from 2021 onwards:

https://www.racingli...aba/2019/06/14/

Jean Todt reportedly held talks about it with government officials. German manufacturers have a strong presence here, with factories and various government deals, and their local divisions already expressed their interest in the idea.

Things went a bit silent since then, but a Formula E race in downtown Budapest would be quite something if you ask me.

Until Honda and Toyota join the party, I'd expect Japanese interest to remain minimal.

Sims does deserve the seat.  I guess there was some speculation about some other "big" name, but that wouldn't really have made much sense given that Maxi was already signed up (i.e. why drop Sims and sign Maxi?  Seems harsh).  Strong young line-up, good on BMW!

I'm glad Sims has the seat, he got pole in New York R2 at the end of last season. Him and Maxi should be a good pairing I think.

Yeah, happy for the guy.
He showed flashes of speed & was pretty consistent in quali, but very unfortunate in race incidents.

Well at least they still have Turvey. Perhaps they'll keep Dillmann on the books and swap with Ma if he underperforms again.

Interesting they're going to use a Dragon powertrain. That should give them a good performance boost i would imagine.

Aren't Dragon using the 2018 powertrain? Why would you buy the Dragon one when you can buy from anyone, presumably for the same set price.

It's technically only a capped maximum price rather than a set price. So the situation can occur in which Dragon offers theirs to NIO/Lisheng for less money than some of the bigger teams, for example.

RSRally also makes a good point further down.

I sort of like how it's similar, in a way. I think it's quite good to get some established visual identies for FE as it's been very variable since season one so far, even in the long running teams.

Even the most casual of F1 fans will know that the red car is (probably) a Ferrari. Techeetah being black and gold for four seasons now is good in that respect.

That is a good question.. i presume because NIO are still involved there may be complications around running the powertrain of another car manufacturer. So Dragon are really the only option.

Nicely done, Envision Virgin... and keeping their KILLER driver line-up... I expect them to be a major contender this season.  Robin has really found his wings now, and Sam is simply "the best driver never to win a championship"

You know what, watching this video, I come to realize how much I've started to associate the whiny electric drivetrain sound with AWESOME racing, to the point it almost gives me goosebumps of anticipation.  I know many will disagree, but to me, that sound has now become engrained into my auto racing fan mind... in a positive way.

Well, word had it that NIO333 is going with Turvey (and why wouldn't they?) and Ma, so the silly season may indeed be over.  If I were them, I would have snapped up Alex Lynn, I feel it's a bit of a rough deal that he didn't find a seat for next season.  Hard to imagine Ma would be an improvement over Dillmann, and that's saying a lot, because Tom was pretty hapless all season, the ONLY driver not to score a single point...

Been followiong this one up with a trawl through local news and it sounds like the list of reasons to extend are strongly connected to event growth. The FIA rule of thumb of at least 100m for every car (2.4km in FE's case this year) makes the current layout (2.1km) a bit too short. Also, last year the Mexico City race pulled in about nearly 44,000 visitors which was a big rise on the year before. The short venue only has an approved capacity for ...about 44,000 visitors. If they want to keep that crowd building they need to be using a longer route over a larger area.

So some interesting possibilities indeed.

At least we'll get plenty of coverage from social medias, plus the live timing!

Also, if they keep the same testing layout we can do some lap times comparison too!
FE always improved performance & efficency season after season, even without technical changes.
Don't expect major gains tho!

(A few tenths)
