Various motoring encyclopedias refer to Alta having offered a saloon after the war. For example, from Georgano's Beaulieu Encyclopedia: "In 1947 an aerodynamic 2 seater and even saloon were offered, but it is unlikely that any were actually built".

 

So were these built, or much more likely do any drawings of these apparent offering exist?

So, seeing as this seems to have defeated the massed minds of this forum  , has a book ever been written on Geoffrey Taylor's Altas, or can anyone recommend any other source of information on Alta history please?

Gav, might be a question worth directing to the readers of The Automobile. Or re-post your question on the long running Alta thread found within TNF's Historical Research section. Fivestar was the Alta man on there.

 

Failing all that, I can tell you that in the 10/7/46 issue of The Motor, there's a brief bit of news and illustration relating to an Alta roadcar. I can try to dig it out if required.

I did search for an Alta thread, but clearly did something wrong (as usual!) as it didn't come up with the Alta thread to which you refer. Found it now thanks and will read it start to finish. if you do happen across the 1946 Motor article sometime, maybe one to post on this thread too?

 

I've been a avid reader of The Automobile since the first edition, so may try there as well.

 

I've wondered about this supposed saloon for years and my interest was revived as Simon Taylor's superb HWM book is now in my book collection alongside Doug Nye's BRM and Cooper books and Graham Rabagliati's Connaught book. On that basis it seems that there is a gap for an Alta book all of it's own.

Now I've had some free time to really get into Simon Taylor's HWM book (and if you haven't bought a copy, do so, it's £130 very well spent) I find in the acknowledgements section; "David Woodhouse is the go-to guru for all Alta questions, and the book he has been working on for so long will be the ultimate authority on Geoffrey Taylor's cars". So I look forward to that.
