https://redbullracin...alex-joins-team

Alexander Albon is being promoted to the Team to drive alongside Max, while Pierre will return to the Red Bull sister team, Scuderia Toro Rosso.

Red Bull are in the unique position of having four talented Formula One drivers under contract who can be rotated between the Team and Toro Rosso. The Team will use the next nine races to evaluate Alex’s performance in order to make an informed decision as to who will drive alongside Max in 2020.

Everyone at the Team looks forward to welcoming Alex and supporting him during the next phase of his F1 career.

Wow, indeed.

They have all the data. And picked Alex over Daniil.

They actually did it. After repeatedly saying they wouldn't.

In that sense it is a shock, but nobody is surprised that this was on the cards.

I'm reeaally curious how this plays out and how competitive Albon is vs. Verstappen and how competitive Gasly is vs Kvyat.

That is so so so so so so early in his career. Will being beaten by Verstappen damage him?

In Formula 1 if a team denies something categorically then the opposite is true.

From Belgium onwards? If so, wow. I hope this won't affect Albon's career negatively though.

Well at least discussion "Will Kvyat replace Gassly at Red Bull in 2020?" is settled now. Interesting choice by Red Bull.

Shouldn't say that I didn't see this comming, but... I didn't see it coming.

I hope it works out for Albon better than it did last time for Kvyat

Not sure how this will pan out for Albon, he's talented but being parachuted into the Red Bull mid season... this will be interesting.

Gasly has just been mediocre for too long. Not surprised they pulled the trigger.

Not expected at all, maybe Kvyat but I guess he burnt that bridge a few years ago.

Not sure if it will be any different for Albon when stepping into the Redbull this year which seems not to be the most easy car to master.

What the heck!! Its from the official RB website.
Didnt see that coming, Marko said quite clearly they would not change lineup in the middle of the season. I did see however the Albon promotion if they didnt go for an outsider, he's the most obvious choice.

Hey. Who would have thought Albon makes it into a top team even quicker than Max himself... Already on his debut season.

Marko delivers once again

Pretty nuts though. Wishing Alex a lot of luck, nobody was ever earlier promoted than him and he isnt exactly the most impressive one. I sense a lot of desperation here.

And Albon himself put the nail on Gasly's coffin in Germany, quite funny

Does everyone need time to get used to a new car? Seems to me that some seem to gel with the car instantly, some not. Gasly had to go, Albon probably was the best available mid season. Since they chose him over Kyvat, they probably see him as a future driver more so than with Kyvat.

I like the guy a lot and really wish him the best, he seems to be a lovely guy and a good 'racer'

but that said, pairing him with Max is going to be tough..

also.. I could have sworn RBR said Gasly would be staying for the rest of the season, did I imagine it?

Kvyat is damaged goods in their eyes. Albon is the new kid on the block with more potential for the future.

Albon has also been more impressive this year, albeit marginally.

Gasly will beat Kvyat at TR, I'm sure of it. He just didn't gel with the RB chassis.

I’m sure RBR are not expecting him to match Max or anything. But him finishing 6th should be the norm in normal races. Pierre failed to do that. And I think the incident with Albon was the straw that broke the camels back

Gasly lost them the Hungary GP, even being 20sec behind was good enough. Gasly didn't do enough.

Marko even said it in Budapest!

Although one journalist (C. Nimmervoll) mentioned that he asked him off the record if it's only because of the lack of options, which he didnt denied.

Seems like they now think that Albon is a option lol

If I was Albon, I'd cancel my holiday plans and start driving that RBR simulator non stop untill the Belgian GP. Putting him in that car with so little experience halfway through the season, against Max who's never driven better is career suicide imo. But on the other hand, can he be any worse than gasly?

Marko is a liar. Once again. I don't understand what the benefit is... Albon needs time to adjust... Look at Formula One in the 90ies. There were Schumacher and Jos Verstappen with such a huge gap at EVERY race. Or Schumacher and Irvine with large gaps... What happened? Kill Gaslys career is such a nonsense if Albon is next... Tell me please - what will be Albons chances against Verstappen?

I personally think changing Gasly for Albon/Kvyat will not make a difference. But I will be happy to be proved wrong and wish Albon all the best, his driving style may be a better fit and not many would turn down such an opportunity.

To go into a RB, mid season with no testing against a beast like Max is asking a LOT though.

Gasly must have been mentally finished and RB probably saw that there looked to be zero signs or willingness to improve.

Will be funny if Gasly now mixes it with Albon during races all over again.  That will be very confusing

He doesn't need to beat Max, just do better than Gasly.

Life can be amazing sometimes.

Remember Albon at the start of last year was racing with Dams in F2 with zero sponsorship money behind him and now he's joining a top team in F1.

This reaffirms how great level F2 had last season.
