Statement: Incident during FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race, Spa Francorchamps

The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) regrets to advise that a serious incident involving cars #12, #19 and #20 occurred at 17:07 on 31/08/19 as a part of the FIA Formula 2 Sprint Race at Spa-Francorchamps, round 17 of the season.

The scene was immediately attended by emergency and medical crews, and all drivers were taken to the medical centre.

As a result of the incident, the FIA regrets to inform that the driver of car #19, Anthoine Hubert (FRA), succumbed to his injuries, and passed away at 18:35.

The driver of car #12, Juan-Manuel Correa (USA), is in a stable condition and is being treated at the CHU Liège hospital. More information on his condition will be provided when it becomes available.

The driver of car #20 Giuliano Alesi (FRA) was checked and declared fit at the medical centre.

The FIA is providing support to the event organisers and the relevant authorities, and has commenced an investigation into the incident.

From the FIA's Facebook page - their website is temporarily down.

Anthoine Hubert was the reigning GP3 Series champion, double F2 race winner, and a Renault F1 development driver.

I had only watched him this year, but he looked to be a quick and intelligent racer, scoring good results in what is not the best team in the series, and had the potential to make it to F1.

Rest in Peace.

Sadly, for all we do to protect our drivers, we cannot eliminate the danger. Reading the news has left me with the same deep empty feeling that is all to familiar from the likes of Moore, Surtees, Wheldon or Wilson.

Rest in peace Anthoine. I never saw you race, but this is hitting me hard for the same reason as losing any racer.

I missed the F2 start, but when I turned on the TV de Vries just entered Eau Rouge and the crash happened just a few seconds later...

Terrible accident. Thoughts are with his family, and with Correa and Alesi.

RIP. Unfortunately motorsport can never be fully safe, there is always a danger of extremely serious accidents. We have seen drivers to survive from very nasty looking accident over the last 15 years or more but sometimes the worst just happens. RIP and I just wish all the best for his family, as shocking as these kind of events are for us motorsport fans, I just dont want to think what his family is going through. I quess the only thing you can say in these situations that they died while doing something they loved to do.

I have to say that when I was watchintg the F2 go through Eau Rouge, I had this feeling that one of the drivers would yet lose control of their car going through there as the cars clearly heavily touched the ground going through there....and just then I saw Alesi losing it going up the hill  :(

I was watching live and it was the worst crash I have seen in nearly 30 years of watching motorsport so this was what I feared. Shows however much it might seem to get in the way at times, we should always be improving safety but we still have to accept that it will never be fully safe.

RIP Anthoine.

RIP Antoine.

He is, was a few weeks younger than my youngest son.
I just cannot imagine.
I love this sport to the very core of my being but there are the days when I absolutely hate it to the same extreme.

Once again RIP Antoine and my thoughts are with his family, friends and team.

Mike.

Anthoine was an outstanding driver. I fondly watched him race in European F3 in 2016, and was impressed by his title victory last year in GP3. He had a very promising career ahead of him indeed.

At its best, this sport of ours is outstanding. It leaves you with a grin on your face which carries you through the week ahead. But it can also be horribly cruel.

Farewell & Godspeed. A huge loss for everyone here and the sport.

The best way to honour his memory is to go out tomorrow and do something you love but rarely do.

When I saw the crash my stomach flipped in exactly the same way as when I saw Bianchis crash, hoping against hope we didn't have to lose yet another talented driver.

Watched him race live a couple of years ago and he was one of the drivers that stood out and I been keeping my eyes on ever since.

I'm so sad for his family, friends and team that they had to lose him this young.

I have to say I didn't really expect the worst. As I was born in the 90s I haven't witnessed the most dangerous era of racing and hearing about it in retrospect just doesn't have the same impact. It's all in the past. Racing isn't like that anymore, right? Those few fatal accidents that still happen from time to time are nothing but freak incidents, right? Yeah, that was probably the last time you saw anything so serious, you tell to yourself. I don't know, maybe I'm just naive.

What a brutal wake-up call this is. RIP

We all love Motorsport. But when it goes wrong, it can go all the way down.
Today we've lost an incredible young talent.

Adieu Anthonie.

I just don't care about this racing weekend anymore. Pack the things up already.

I saw it on sky, horrific crash that made me feel sick.  I know next to nothing about him but it's an incredibly sad day indeed, a racer lost at such a young age.   Very sad indeed, my thoughts are with his friends and family.  Rest in peace mate.

I feel really, really sad tonight.  :(  Can't believe we have another motorsport fatality...they seem so rare nowadays, so when they do happen it seems to hit harder. But tomorrow's race should not be cancelled...motor racing is dangerous, all the drivers know that. But they still love the sport, and so, despite everything, do I.

I should imagine there will be a minute's silence in memory of Anthoine before the GP tomorrow.

RIP Anthoine.

I dunno what to say, it all seems completely empty. I saw the crash when I got a notification about it, I must admit I saw it on YouTube. I didn’t expect the worst. I saw it, I thought it was nasty but the survival cells are so strong, I was worried someone might have got injured but this news has hit me like a brick. Seriously, what the hell.

It's times like these where I try to find comfort in the fact that he was doing what he loved when it happened.

Don't cry because it is over. Smile because it happened. - His life was cut way to short, but he surely had a good time while being there, and shared it with so many others, around the world.

Also. What stuck with me from Indy at Las Vegas in 2011 was Marty Reid signing off, and I'll take his quote for this. "Many people ask me why I always sign off, 'Till we meet again' -- because goodbye is always so final."

Goodbye Anthoine Hubert.
