The Porsche 917/30 CamAm car is righty famous fro its enormous power of 1,100 bhp even in race trim.

The Bugatti Vweyron easily surpasses that in road car but with a physically HUGE engine.

Again from Engnelabs is 1,200 bhp turbo 911 bult  for Pikes Peak.

Now obviusly it doesnt have to last too long and it probably develops on average way less than 1,200 bhp becuase of the altitiude at the top but interesting nonetheless.

It does make one realise that having a seriously powerful Endurance class is perfectly possible if the rule makers would  be willing to back off their  hybrid obsession. I'm not kocking hybrids for road or even race use but , at least for a while they are an OEM only car and 90% of Endurance racing has always been privateers.

Aren't those LMP hybrids on the high side of 1000hp these days?

You could have lots and lots of power in racing easy, but you'd have to cut back big time on the downforce.

Article says the engine as built will cope with 1600 hp short duration.

Turbo engines cope very well with altitude. If appropriately matched it is possible to have almost zero power reduction with altitude although in this case they selected "small" turbos for torque spread - a questionable choice for Pikes Peak where larger turbos would enable constant power from start to finish.

Isn't the 917/30 engine also "physically huge"?

Yes. The 919 had 500hp+ from the ICE and 500hp from the hybrid system.

They were getting so powerful that the ACO introduced limits for Le Mans, though they did not apply to the WEC.

The original 917 flat 12 was quite compact, perhaps a bit bigger bore separation than for a water cooled engine. It was not a clean sheet design but it was still more elegant than a stock block V8 (e.g. Ford GT40). Photos show that the turbo version was a much larger installation and the wheelbase was increased. Compared to many modern day sports cars, however, it was a small car.
