I know that Barry Sheene had his first race was at Brands Hatch in 1968 on one of his fathers 125 Bultacos and won. As it was a club meeting does anyone know which club it was and has anyone got that meetings programme?.

I'm guessing Bemsee, or I think there used to a club called the Southern 67 or something like that, I dont think that many different clubs used Brands but I could be wrong.

Thanks Paul I was thinking it might be Southern 67. Lets's hope someone confirms that.

Wiki tells it right:

"Sheene began competitive motorcycle racing in 1968, winning his first races at Brands Hatch riding father Frank's 125cc and 250cc Bultacos. He improved to second behind Chas Mortimer in 1969 in the 125cc class on the Bultaco.

By 1970, Sheene had become the British 125c champion at age 20, riding a former Suzuki factory racing team motorcycle that he purchased for £2,000. The 1967 Suzuki RT67 twin-cylinder motorcycle had previously been ridden by Suzuki Factory-backed rider, Stuart Graham in the 1968 Grands Prix and in selected 1969 events.

In 1971, still riding the same Suzuki twin, he finished second in the 125cc World Championship, probably missing the title due to injuries sustained in a well-paid non-championship race at Hengelo (Netherlands) and during the Race Of the Year at Mallory Park (compression fractures of three vertebrae and five broken ribs).

His first Grand Prix win coming on that bike at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, soon followed by a win on a 50cc Van Veen Kreidler at the Czechoslovakian Grand Prix held at the Masaryk Circuit, where he finished over two and a half minutes ahead."

Thanks for the reply T54 but I take it you don't know the club that was running that 1968 meeting?.

I would hazard a guess the meeting was run by the Greenwich Club, or possibly the Brands Combine, I think Southern 67 started later,

Thanks for the reply but I think the the Southern 67 club started in 1967 hence the name.

If you haven’t yet established which club was running that meeting, I will ask if it was my own, the Greenwich club (which along with the Gravesend and Rochester clubs comprised the Brands Racing Committee which eventually became the KRC). I think I’m right in saying that we ran more motorcycle meetings at Brands than other clubs. Let me know.

Thanks for the reply Perruqueporte but as yet no luck. I think I need to find a copies of MCN for that year. I think the month was July but again am not sure.
