Sad to see the death being reported of leading British Rally driver of the seventies and eighties Russell Brookes.

Very sorry to read this. I only met him once and we ended up having an argument, but he was one of the stars of rallying when the British Rally Championship was a major world series. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Think Russell Brookes and the instant image is an  Andrews liveried car - an Escort or Manta - hammering through a stage like Dalby or Cropton on the RAC or Mintex . Usually seeded behind the Scandinavian superstars, but ahead of all the Brits except Clark

Sad news, his health had been in decline in later years. But it was always good to see him at Goodwood, Castle Combe and Stoneleigh etc.

One of his (if not THE) greatest fightbacks must be the '78 Circuit of Ireland, he went through a stonewall at Knockalla early on.

With great support from Mick Jones and his crew they kept the car going, and then with clever use of A2s during torrential weather

going towards the Killarney rest halt they managed to claw back all the time lost and ended up winning the event!

He was a proper rally man through and through, and was deeply disappointed when they softened up the RAC in '86.

This after complaints from mainly Finnish drivers during the previous year's event, Dave Whittock's masterpiece  :)
