I can’t believe it’s taken so long to get this thread...

What a champion. Just 1 more championship and 8 wins to match Michael’s records.

We are witnessing one of the best, if not the best, F1 drivers of all time. Possibly the greatest British sportsperson too.

Magnificent, a truly great achievement.

I know right! Unbelievable achievement given all the doubt he had over the years after the turbulent years at McLaren. If anything I think he’s underrated after SIX titles.

I think as we have all known this was coming its a bit underwelming to be honest, with this just being a stepping stone to 7. Hamilton himself only celebrated like it was a race win, if anything he was more animated last race.

Congratulations to the champ, six times. Guess it's fair to say that's the best way any driver has ever won the 6th F1 WDC. ;) And it doesn't quite feel as if this was the last one to me.

Amazing performance. He´s had a really strong season once more, barely making any error, and definitely no significant ones. Deserved champ. I do hope Ferrari and RB will be close. If he wins the 7th one, it better be in a close fight :).

There were honestly moments in Lewis's career where I convinced myself he was never going to win another title. Even after the W05, I thought the 2014 title was done and dusted after the Belgian GP and he was cursed. I'm so glad I was wrong and I have been privileged enough to see a legend in the making.

There aren't really any more superlatives I can offer. So I'll just say congratulations. Another fantastic season from him and Mercedes.

Lewis has taught me to never stop believing. China 2007, Brazil 2007, Spa 2008, Melbourne 2009, Silverstone 2009, Spain 2010, all of 2011 and 2012, Malaysia 2016. All hard times but he kept fighting, kept his head up and kept delivering. What a man.

Fair enough, I would applaud if I had watched any of it, but sadly these days I have much better sport to watch.

Can't argue with the achievement, but I do think its easier now than it was years ago sadly.

Anybody who watched Lewis in the junior formulae are not going to be surprised by any of this - there was just something that Lewis "had" that other drivers did not.

An underrated year. Basically a continuation of 2018 for me. Unbeatable over a season.

Always difficult to enjoy the moment after such a long period of inevitability :p

One does not win 6 WDCs by accident - Lewis is arguably the most talented driver of the generation.

Congrats, little else to say

He's making incredible achievements look routine just like Michael did, and that's a measure of the man and driver he's become. By far the most complete driver since Schumacher and has taken the pioneering work Schumacher did in sculpting what a modern racing driver should be to the next level.

Truly one of the very greatest of all time, on probably a four-man shortlist for me.

He's achieved a lot in F1, Well deserved as well.

I do think the next couple of years may well be his toughest yet in F1 (with exception of 2007) and also to match and surpass Schumacher, the young guns are lining up for a title shot.

Anyway, congratulations to Lewis Hamilton, WDC x 6 is amazing !

Translation:

"Ah crap, there we go again. Of course I watched the race but admitting so wouldn't cheapen the achievement as much as I want to, so let's say I didn't watch the race coz F1 sucks (but not enough to stop following it on an F1-specific forum).

Alright, let's say something that could be interpreted as positive with lots of imagination, though I have to sh*t on this achievement one more time before I go back to my cave."

I agree with this a lot.

The first one was incredibly special, the most unbelievable end to a title race in F1 history. The 2nd was special because it was so long after the first, the 3rd matched him with Senna. The 4th matched him to Vettel after a season long battle. The 5th brought him level to Fangio and moved him clear of Vettel, the 6th is a stepping stone.

It’s a bit bizarre that 6 titles is an incredible achievement that only 1 man has done previously, yet we’re all expecting at least 1 more. Hard to explain really. Most drivers are desperate for 1 title, some just for 1 win. 6 isn’t enough for Lewis, and our expectations of him.

So happy to be witnessing greatness.

From a dad working 3 jobs to create the opportunity for his son, to a gravel trap in China, to today.

What a ride.

Everything thrown at him he's had an answer for.

It's sort of been inevitable for a while. What I admire about Lewis though is his desire for more. On a day he could have cruised to third for the title he was fighting with all he had for the victory. He says he's feeling fresh, so those eagerly awaiting a drop off or fatigue may be waiting a while.

As I am always proud to say, I considered him the best even before he started in F1 .... but there was a point in 2008 when it was going away from him when I said to myself .... I dont care if this guy never wins a title - In my view, he is clearly the best out there and the one I most enjoy watching. .... and so even though I dont rate drivers by titles or wins etc but instead based on what I can see of their talent, I am really pleased to see him living up to his potential in terms of titles and stats.

Six times WDC!!! Wow! I mean, who would have thought we would be saying that when Lewis was having his worst ever season in 2011? And then when he joined Mercedes, many people said he was the new Jacques Villeneuve. But Lewis showed his detractors...after all, form is temporary, but class is permanent!

Without doubt, Lewis will go down as one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time, no matter what he does from now on. However, I do think he has at least one more WDC in him.

Congratulations Lewis!

And to think many years ago we had people on this forum gleefully saying Lewis will be another villeneuve. :p  I enjoy nothing more than watching people eat their words. I know one step at a time but WDC 8 will be the greatest achievement in F1. I know deep down he is aiming for that.  Gone are the 'I want to match my hero with 3 x wdc'

It’s an incredible achievement, won both on the track and in his inspired decision to switch from McLaren to Mercedes at the end of 2012. All those years plugging away at McLaren, all the individual race victories but also all the bumps and the disappointments, the frustration of driving such a weak car in 2009, the way he turned that season around and then somehow lost the championship in 2010 and 2012 as well despite being arguably the best driver in both seasons, the irritation of watching Vettel clean up in the Red Bull rocketships. Through all of that he’s just made himself a better driver. People say Schumacher showed his genius in his early Ferrari years to make sure there were no question marks against him when he started racking up the numbers 2001-04 but I think Hamilton’s 2009-13 “wilderness years” were pretty directly comparable.

so when the opportunity has presented itself in 2014 not just to win another title, but the opportunity to absolutely clean up, to dominate and sit at the top table for years to come, he’s grabbed it with both hands. Yeah, some of his titles have almost been too easy such has Mercedes’ dominance been, but anyone questioning his right to be up among the top, top legends in terms of numbers only has to watch him completely destroy Vettel’s confidence in 2017-18 when Ferrari caught up with Mercedes. Ferrari caught up sure, but their drivers certainly didn’t catch up with Lewis.

The fact that he didn’t blow away either Button or Rosberg will always be the slight niggle against him I reckon, but there’ll always be something.

Agree. He's in the quite peculiar position of being so good, and winning so often over the past 6 seasons that it's become almost too familiar now to the point people would get more excited/impressed if another driver were to win a championship instead of him. What a position to be in though :stoned:

IF he's in a position again to fight for a 7th and actually takes it I hope the reality and magnitude of it hits home again because like so many have said lately, did anybody really think back in 2004 after Michael was taking his 7th championship that anybody would ever get close to him? I certainly didn't and also didn't think anybody would be anywhere near him as quickly as Lewis has gotten. Even if he never gets to number 7, what a career he's had so far.

2007 alone should have been enough. He matched Fernando Alonso (Fernando Alonso!) straight off the bat ffs.

It always seemed to me that the ending of 2007 and the tumultuous 2008 marked his career for years in many people’s eyes and then 2011 confirmed he was some kind of chancer all along. Some of the myths that built up were crazy. Barring that dreadful season he has been a model of consistency since mid-2009 I would say but it only seems to have been recognised in the last year or two.

actually 0-0 vs Button and 2-1 vs Rosberg.

I know the point you’re making and don’t disagree with it, but I’m not talking about career-long records but head to heads as team-mates.

Congrats Lewis. 6 times is incredible.

Big congrats to Mercedes as well. Been a huge part of that success.

14 to 16 was Merc dominance. 17 to 19 has been Merc and Hamilton dominance IMO. Hamilton has made it look way easier than it should have been these last 3 years.
