I'm collecting quotes on recent matters from former F1 champion, Jaques Villeneuve. If you have interesting ones, feel free to post those or express your own opionion.

Let's start from Hulkenberg:

“He’s been here for a long time. He has the record for the most races without a podium, so he knows he’s had a career that is probably longer than it should have been.

“But he’s been lucky because, regardless of the cars he has had, he has always been a professional driver who is paid. He knows very well that his career in F1 is over now,”

On Kubica (who replaced him before 2006 Hungarian grand prix at BMW-Sauber grand prix)

“I was not a fan of him returning,” he told TVP Sport.

“For me Formula One is for the elite, it is for the absolute best. The only thing that counts is that Robert is clearly slower than his team-mate, who is after all a debutant."

On 22 races in 2020

"The calendar is becoming too long and boring. For fans it would be better if there were fewer races and more tests," Villeneuve said.

"The new owners of the championship see more races as more income, and that's all that excites them. But I don't think it really benefits F1.

"The calendar is getting longer, and the audience is getting more bored," he added.

On Verstappen (at Mexico)

 “I think he’s a bad role model.

“He was on pole, he did not think and that was not very clever.”

The Canadian added that the stewards had to penalise Verstappen otherwise “that would be really bad for Formula One” and the lessons it is teaching the juniors.

He added: “The driver should never be allowed to decide whether it’s safe or not, because there could be something else behind the corner that he does not know about.”

On new rules

"To me, it's pure socialism," Villeneuve said. "F1 deserves better than that. Only the top three teams will spend the $175 million. Williams put about $16 million in its pocket last year while finishing last. So the management and the shareholders are happy.

"Even if the cap was $50 million, Williams would spend 20 and stay at the bottom. So it's a joke. Nobody wins."

"We don't care if they are slower," Villeneuve said. "All they need to do is design cars that are hard to drive. But now they'll be 25 kg heavier. The heavier they are, the more stable they are. It will not help.

"We will have a show when cars are lighter and more nervous. That will not be the case. Speed has nothing to do with the quality of the races."

The same Jacques Villeneuve who nearly cost himself his only WDC by ignoring yellow flags.

from the 2030 carbon neutral topic:

"It's to say 'Look, we're green, please love us!" Former world champion Jacques Villeneuve also told RMC sport on the matter. "If you're really green, then you don't do sports, you don't do concerts, you do not do car racing. We have to say it how it is, and it doesn't fit with motorsport."

I think the Williams take is probably the most controversial, just because none of us want to admit that a team with their history now seems satisfied with participation trophies.

on some drivers whining about wet conditions:

"What do you expect?" "Most of them are still babies. If we want to excite the fans of tomorrow, we need heroes. Idols they can look up to and want to copy.

"But what they see today are drivers who earn millions but are cowards hiding behind a safety car. What makes a grand prix driver so special is no longer coming through."

You can think of Villeneuve what you want, at least he speaks his mind and most of the time he isn’t wrong either.

I get to hear him all the time because I live in Italy and he's a pundit for Sky Sport F1 Italy... to be honest I don't mind him.

Sometimes he's a bit over the edge and he's not always correct, but he's not scared to say what he thinks.

You mean, he, as a driver wasn't able to decide if it was safe or not (even though he tried)?

Don't see how it fits with "can't make it up".

On comparison between Hamilton an Schumacher

"These two drivers only won when they had the best car," he told Motorsport-Total.com.

"They've always had the best car in their entire career, and if you put Lewis in a Williams, you do not win."

"[Hamilton] He's super good and always makes the right decision as to which team to go to."

"There he builds a team around him, that's all. He might not have won in a Ferrari."

Villeneuve (and Piquet, too) get a lot of crap for what they say, but generally they are right. I wish we had more honest, accurate commentary like this.

I don't know. I've heard of Ross Berg tho. Together with an old friend; Tim O'Glock.

There are plenty of us that don’t judge the mettle of a man by his accomplishments on the track.  They’re basically grown men playing with toys and not particularly relevant (or even necessary) to the broader picture of mankind.  Villenueuve’s observations aren’t particularly newsworthy, deep or even insightful.  They’re rants from a former driver that are obvious to most observers.  The fact he drove well at one point doesn’t give them more weight than anyone else.

i like this man, he reminds the 90's rockn'roll spirit

Indianapolis winner and indycar champion in its golden era

F1 world champion against michael schumacher, multiple poles and wins. Great overtaking skills. Dominating damon hill in his first season.

He could have grabbed more titles but chosed to build a team with a friend.

He is not politically correct and that offend some people. I do share many of his opinions on rules. It's an added value to hear an expert, don't understand why some people feel unsecure if they don't have a politician langage

In french tv, he is clearly an asset and the other journalist, depiste being a nice guy, learned a lot with him.

My quote was incorrect regarding the stats but he challenged Damon hill for the title until the end

He had to learn all tracks, there was no simulators, it was his rookie season. It was fair between both drivers.

That it was. It was one of the two best debut seasons ever.

An older quote and some bite back from Max V

Villeneuve gave an interview to motorsport.com in which he joined the long queue of drivers past and present who have criticised the Dutch teenager, saying that, "what he did to Kimi [Raikkonen] twice on the straight, and to [Sebastian] Vettel as well. Just calm down. You're going to kill someone.”

Verstappen was asked about the criticism ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, and hit back in forthright fashion.

"He should watch a little with his statements that someone dies, because he himself has killed someone," said Verstappen, referring to the race marshal who died at the Australian Grand Prix in 2001 when hit by debris from Villeneuve's car.

"He has to look at himself. I think what he says is not respectful to the family of the deceased marshal."
