That quote that senna said before hand that he would take prost off and that made it alright for JV is so much bullshit. What an idiot. So if for instance next season at abu dhabi verstappen leads hamilton by one point and says before the race i win or we crash and takes Hamilton of at the start its alright by jacques? What an imbecile.

You need a little bit history lessons tot this. The year before Prost took Senna out in the lead and therefor winning the championship. This was pay back time from Senna.
I don't say it is ok from JV to saying things like this, but you need to know the whole story.

Going back to post 1 - not a single thing said is untrue.

JV certainly knows how to use as little tact as possible to get his thoughts across.

Max's comment about killing someone is disgraceful and I hope he carries some shame for that.

I'm not misinformed about Jacque's opinions at all, they have been laid out in this thread quite well. He clearly considers himself a better F1 driver than both Michael and Lewis, and common evidence does not back this up. He was a fine driver, but not on he same level as those two. This is not really something that should be up for discussion anywhere outside of his head.

To paraphrase o’l Jack...

As champions you’re either a Schumacher or Button.  Villeneuve is a Button...

I liked him as a driver. As a pundit he is amusing in my opinion. Yet often he misses nuance and sometimes just says things to create an effect.

However, where on earth did he say he was better than Michael or Lewis? I didn’t read that anywhere. Is it your own assumption that because he made comments about them, he automatically puts himself above that?

"He should watch a little with his statements that someone dies, "because he himself has killed someone," said Verstappen, referring to the race marshal who died at the Australian Grand Prix in 2001 when hit by debris from Villeneuve's car.

You put that in quotation marks but that's was on the Dutch NOS and said in Dutch .

The word " doodgereden " doesn't really translate to killed .

Max's comment about killing someone is disgraceful and I hope he carries some shame for that.

Max acts like a smartass, but he says the silliest things sometimes, his most recent one being his statement of Ferrari cheating, a situation which a driver can't possibly know when even the FIA can't seem to be sure. Another thing he needs to learn is that famous people from the world of F1 will be asked by the press from time to time about this and that and he may not agree with them (see Rosberg, Villeneuve, Irvine and so on). But if you don't like what they have to say, best thing is to ignore them instead of acting childish. You are a sportsman, people know you and they will talk about you. Villeneuve talks a lot of bs, but sometimes, rarely, he is spot on, like he was about Verstappen's comments.

Look at post #48 chief - I didn't execute the translation.

on HANS device back in the day:

"No driver would have been saved by the system in the last nine years because there was no accident that required it. But Diniz would have been killed if he had been wearing the HANS device when he had his big accident," Villeneuve was quoted as saying in News of the World. "So the only one time it would have made a difference it would have killed someone. On that basis it's wrong for us drive with it." Such comments are irritating for those who have spent years developing, perfecting and testing the system. They say that science does not back up Villeneuve's claims.

If you think this is true or makes any sense, do explain: "Even if the cap was $50 million, Williams would spend 20..."

Williams is run by a board and has shareholders wanting profit though doesn't it? I know I'm doing a poor job of communicating what I mean, as all race teams are a business so to speak. But I get the feeling they are more about business/profits/shareholders than race team.

The man is frustratingly right a lot of the times. Perhaps we dislike him because he's saying what we won't even write. But perhaps should.
I did rate him a lot as a driver. The way he came into an alien environment and started whipping the establishment immediately was really impressive. If you missed Mansell, there was JV for you.

Frustratingly right is a good way of putting it.

His delivery sucks ass though. He comes across as a pompous, tactless, arrogant pr*ck which understandibly annoys people, even if he is right.

He's paid to be like this. I wonder if he even believes half of what he spouts.

It isn't a coincidence that his TV counterpart is Davide Valsecchi, who is just a lovely lovely man. JV is just a paid village idiot, there to act as a foil to Valsecchi's respectful, human approach.

This is a bloke who once threw then-teammate Heinz-Harald Frentzen's lunch in the bin, as a means of getting into his head. This is the kind of person we are discussing.

JV is wrong about the HANS device. I know he was vocally against it's introduction in the first place.

For one thing, just look how drivers' heads and necks were jerked around in even fairly minor impacts prior to it's introduction....and tell me it didn't save Kubica in Montreal in 2007.

Because Williams don't have more than 20 million to spend, a cap is not a budget

Their budget is over 100 million. Fom money alone is more than 50.

Most things he states are simple facts the rest are opinions that are hard to argue with

I think he is a bigmouth who wants to draw attention on himself. He has created a character out of himself of being the "politically incorrect guy of F1" and now he is a prisoner of it.

Ok we let it run for a bit but we could all see that it was just going to be an opportunity to bash Jacques Villeneuve for things he's said. There's no particular remit to this thread existing, it's not focusing on a particular topic and it's now digging up anything he might have said in the past just to take a swipe at him.

If you want to discuss Jacques' comments on a particular issue, find a thread about that issue (where I'm sure his comments have already been brought up). As it is, this is just a driver thread and it's the worst kind of driver thread as it is specifically avoiding his actual achievements.
