This says Attack Mode is mandatory:

Yes it is. You need to activate it twice (or whatever number they decide, it's been twice in all but one race), though strictly speaking you can activate it in the last lap and not use the full time.

Oops... Yep looks like it is. Almost sure the commentators on the broadcast I watched said that it wasn't mandatory. But they were not very good commentators tbh.

On aother note, just finished watching the 2nd one and it has been quite entertaning! But not for the racing itself, but for the many incidents and weird stuff that happened.
SC was gone too early, then there was an investigation on the SC exiting too early, hilarious. Also Da Costa slowing down while Sims was picking the attack mode, on the restart, never seen before.

And Alex Sims looks like a typical office worker.

Yes, correct.

As with mandated tire stops, I am never happy to see anything mandatory when it comes to race strategy.  I think it would be a much more interesting proposal to have the attack mode in a place where it doesn't cause loss of time/position, and to scrap the mandatory requirement, so teams can choose their strategy - do they preserve maximum power and NOT use the attack mode?  Do they use it once, twice?  Maybe even three times, IF they still think they can make their energy reserves work out.  Why not?

I think about Attack Mode as the FE equivalent of a traditional mandatory Pit Stop.

You loose some time, but in the following laps you're much quicker & you can attack & undercut your rivals.

I like the strategy element of it, the only problem is the track placement, often wrong like in Riyadh.

Yes, attack mode should be for drivers wanting to go on the attack forward, rather than "oh jeez, I still HAVE to use my mandated attack mode, how can I best do this with the least amount of damage to my race? I sure wish I didn't have to use it. Well, hopefully there will be a FCY, so I can sneak it in" as it often is now.

Another problem with attack mode on this circuit is that the majority of the circuit is tight and twisty. There is only 1 back straight where the extra power can actually make a difference. The quicker drivers where able to pull away through the twisty section even with the car behind had attack mode.

In the first race Bird and Lotterer could overtake using attack mode after losing time activating it, but Sims and the 2 Mercs lost positions activating attack mode but couldnt gain those positions back with attack mode.

If you are in the middle of the train its better to not use it. But if you have a gap behind and you struggle to overtake someone in front, its useful.
As said above, you have to take it as a risky bet. If they placed that in an easy place, it wouldn't be risky anymore, everyone would use it all the time, it would not be such a factor.

Not at all time but in RIGHT time let's say two or three times in each race whenever they want. That would make sense. I don't understand "HELP" attack mode when you actually penalize you.

Bird and Evans basically agree their clash was a racing incident
